On
09 April 2004, Alfonso Renteria (50) was sentenced to five years of
probation. Superior Court Judge Allan J. Preckel called the death of
James Curry-Long, "an accident." To put Renteria in jail or prison
would "further compound the tragedy," the judge said. Renteria was
ordered to surrender his driver's license for a year, to perform 100
hours of volunteer work a year for the next five years and pay the
Curry family $22,000 for their expenses.
To say James’ mother was unhappy with the verdict
would be an
understatement. “I find it an insult that he walked out," she is
quoted as having said outside the courtroom. "My son didn't deserve a
death sentence for not crossing at the crosswalk."
James' girlfriend, Christina, was very angry with
the verdict as well. "The man who killed James didn't get
punished like he should of for MURDERING my boyfriend. She also
proclaimed, "The man walked out with his family, while James' family
walked out without James and without justice..."
