Part 1
Spring of '94'
I ran down stairs with my basketball
in one hand and my money in the other. "Vanesa?" My mother called
from in the kitchen. She and her friends were in the kitchen for their daily
gossip. They always talking bout folks, I thought to myself as I pushed through
the kitchen door. "Yes?" I asked eager to get outside. She looked
at me and smiled, her cigarette in-between her two fingers. I looked into her
eyes. She looked so stressed, she ought to be after the divorce she'd just been
through with my dad. They tried to say they were growing apart, but I aint dumb,
I know my mother was keeping something from my dad and I. The strange phone
calls, the out of the blue meetings with a certain someone. My dad didn't say
anything until last month. The arguments were becoming too much, they'd fight
all night about how my dad thought my mom was cheating. He soon resolved everything
by leaving one night, and sending divorce papers two weeks later. I go to visit
him every chance I can, since he is in the army. She was hurt that her own husband
couldn't trust her. Every since then she'd been moping around the house either
smoking or gossiping, sometimes both. "You go out and play like a nice
young lady...I don't want Ms. Frederick's calling me again with complaints about
you beating up on Dreux, you hear me?" I sighed rolling my eyes. "Yes
momma." I turned around running out the front door. The sun was out and
everyone was outside as I bounced my ball down the street. "What's up Nesa!"
a voice called from across the street. I squinted and put my hand over my eyes
so I could see better. "O what's up De'mario!" I called back running
across the street. De'mario is one of my very good friends, not to mention Dreux
and Jarell. I live across the street from him while Jarell and Druex lived next
door. We all grew up together in Inglewood, California on a block which we called
'the block'. "Where you going?" he asked sitting on a step. "Bout
to go over here and mess with Dreux." I admitted bouncing the ball off
the porch. He shook his head and laughed outloud. "What's funny?"
I asked curiously. "You really didn't have to punch that boy like you did
yesterday." I laughed with him remembering how he cried out for his mother
instead of fighting back. "He was asking for it D, you saw how he kept
crossing over me like he was Magic Johnson!" I replied imitating him. De'mario
fell back across the porch laughing his lungs out. He sat up and sighed holding
his stomach. "So where yo boy at?" I asked referring to Jarell. Jarell
was normally my punch bag buddy, but I hadn't seen him outside lately. "He
over in Ohio with his cousin for spring break."
"Who his cousin?" I asked being nosy as always. I'm not the type to
gossip unlike my mom but I can get very nosy...like my mom. "His name Omari,
he supposed to be coming back to live with Jarell from what I hear. " he
answered picking up a stick trying to poke me with it. "You trying to start
something?" I asked dropping the ball and stepping up towards him. "Naw,
you think I'm gone mess with you after seeing how you handled Druex?" he
said laughing again. I stepped down from the porch and picked up the ball. "I'm
going to see if this punk wanna ball, you coming?"
"Yea I'll be round there in a minute." he said standing up and walking
in the house, slamming the door behind him. "De'mario what I say about
slamming my damn door boy?" I heard his mom yell from the living room.
I laughed to myself walking across the lawn to Druex's house. I rung the door
bell twice and waited for an answer. His mom came to door with a 'you got some
nerve' look on her face. I tried to keep myself from laughing and smiled innocently.
"Hi Ms. Fredericks, can Dreux come out and play?" She looked me up
and down and called for Dreux to come outside. He appeared a few minutes later
and closed the door behind him. "What you want?" he asked still upset
from yesterday. "I came to beat yo face-" I started but then stopped
myself once I saw his mother in the window. " I came to play basketball."
I said and smiled to him. He looked at me funny and then waved at De'mario who
was on his way over towards us. "No hitting?"
"No hitting." I vowed putting my hand to my chest, which was now starting
to grow breast. The guys would pick on me all the time about my little grapefruits...that's
how I became so evil towards them, I'll hit anybody who stepped in my face with
a wrong comment. "Hol on, let me change my shoes" he said. A few minutes
later he returned with some busted black and white jordans on. "Let's play
ball" I said stepping off the porch. We were at the court in less than
fifteen minutes. "We uneven" De'mario pointed out seeing that it was
just the three of us. I looked around the playground seeing nothing but lil
prissy girls around me. "Mayne where we gone get a fourth player?"
Dreux asked out loud. At the minute he said that Jarell came running towards
them. "What's up yall?" he said slapping hands with De'mario and Dreux.
I greeted him with a smile. "You playing?"
"Dang Nesa I just came from the airport, can I rest a little?"
"We playing for money." I added in knowing he was going to take my
offer. "Who team I'm on?" Jarell said changing his mind quickly. I
laughed and pulled him over to me. "Cough it up." I said throwing
out a five dollar bill. De'mario threw in ten dollars while Dreux pitched in
five. We all looked at Jarell waiting for him to do the same. He was always
being stingy with his money. He sighed and pulled out a five dollar bill. "I
gotta win this game if I'm putting in all my allowance" he complained taking
the ball from me. This nigga done grew some balls since he been away, I thought
to myself letting him take it. "Aight heads or tails?" I asked taking
out a penny. "Heads" De'mario called. I flipped the penny up and it
landed back on the back of my hand. "Tails...our ball." I smiled snatching
the ball back from Jarell. He paid no mind and took his place in front of De'mario
trying to block him. Druex stood infront of me his knees bent as he kept his
eyes on the ball the whole time. I eyed him as the ball bounced between my legs
then through his and into Jarell's hands. He shook De'mario and did a layup
making it into the hoop. I screamed and slapped hands with Jarell. "One
to none!" I taunted in Dreux face. He rolled his eyes passing the ball
to De'mario. The game quickly ended ten to eight as Jarell and I sat on the
swings counting the money. "Twenty-five dollars" I said handing Jarell
twelve dollars and giving Dreux a dollar. "Yawl can split it fifty-fifty."
I joked nudging Jarell in his side. He laughed and stuck his money in his back
pocket. "Ha ha very funny!" Druex said handing the dollar to De'mario.
He balled it in his hand and threw it at Jarell. "By the way, where yo
cousin at?"
"He back at the house getting his stuff unpacked" Jarell replied sirens
drowning out his voice. Our eyes followed the fire truck down the street towards
our block. "Eh lets go check it out" Jarell said picking up the ball
and leading us from the playground. We were there at the street light a couple
of feet from my house when he stopped. "Um...Nesa you might want to come
check this out." he called back to me. I looked up to see paramedics carrying
my mother out on a stretcher. "Ma!" I called running up to the front
lawn. I was stopped by a police officer. "That's my momma!" I cried
as tears formed in the corner of my eyes. He let me by as I made my way to the
stretcher. I began to cry harder seeing her struggle to breathe. All kinds of
thoughts began to run through my head as I watched her shake intensely. "Mommy
don't leave me, please don't go," I cried trying to keep up with the the
paramedics. I jumped in the back of the van, still trying to keep her calm as
blood poured out of her mouth. I could see that she was scared because tears
ran down the sides of her face. "You've got to help her!" I screamed
seeing the amount of pain she was in. My heart raced as doctors just continued
to hook tubes in her arms and inject fluids in her. She reached out and took
my hand into hers as her eyes rolled to the back of her head and she suddenly
stopped breathing. It was silence, no more shaking, no more coughing, just pure
dead silence. Her hand loosened in mines as I looked into the whites of my mother's
eyes and laid my head upon her chest. At that very moment I had just watched
my mom die.
Part 2
Nine years later
I pulled into the driveway of my childhood house and thought back to all the
fun days my mother and I had. I walked up the walkway and opened the door stepping
into a house full of memories. When my mom died I went to live with my aunt
across town until I finished my first year in college. We decided that I'll
buy my moms house and she'd pay the bills until I graduated. I went back up
to my room and sat down reminiscing back to the days I used to sit and watch
basketball with my friends. Man I sure do miss them. I sat there caught up in
my thoughts when a rock came flying against my window. I jumped up and looked
out the window seeing a tall medium sized figure outside. I squinted to see
better and immediately noticed who it was. "Druex!" I screamed running
downstairs and out the front door. He met me half way as I jumped in his arms.
"I'm so glad to see you!" I cried as he sat me down. He stepped back
to examine me shaking his head. "Damn girl, you changed a lot!" He
said eyeing me from head to toe. "Is that a good or bad thing?" I
asked studying his illegible face expression. "That's a good thing"
he replied shyly. He has changed so much, I thought to myself as I eyed him
up and down. "Look at you trying to grow a lil mustache, and these muscles."
I said pinching his arm. He was wearing a white Sean john T-shirt with the sleeves
cut off, over a pair of blue denim Sean John jeans. He smiled popping his collar.
I laughed as I hugged him again. "Man, you really look good." I told
him again as we sat down on the front porch. "Well without you here to
beat up on me, I've had time to grow into my looks." he said pushing her
lightly. "You know, I always wondered why you would never hit me back?"
I asked looking into his brown eyes I've never noticed before. He really has
grown into a man, I thought as I studied him closely. He still had that crazy
southern accent. Which was now a sexy southern ascent. His small tight curls
were now long and pulled back into a pony tail. His smile was still the same,
very shy but still able to say 'Hi' every time he opened his mouth. "You
know my mother never approved of me hitting girls, even when they hit me first."
I smiled at the comment he made. He really was a good friend to me, I don't
know why I so mean to him. I guess because of all the stress I was under at
the time had me tripping on everybody. "So what brings you back to the
block?" he asked curiously. "Well, I decided to buy this place."
I answered looking back at the house. "Really?" I nodded yes as he
smiled widely. "What you thinking about?" I asked seeing the face
he always made when he was up to something. "We could be like old times
again..except for the punching and stuff, cause I'll hit you back now!"
he assured me. I laughed throwing my head back at what he'd just said. "Yea,
just like old times."
'Later that week'
After unpacking the last box I fell to the couch exhausted from all the work
I had done this past three days. I still had more work to do. I went to the
kitchen and pulled out a bottled water. Just as I returned someone knocked on
the front door. I opened it to see Dreux there with a bag of Chinese food. "Ooh
my favorite," I said grabbing the bag away from him. "Well, you're
welcome" he sarcastically replied walking in. He took a seat beside me
and proceeded to join me in eating. "I meant to ask you, where Jarell and
De'mario run off to?" I asked spreading soy sauce on my fried rice. Dreux
stopped to swallow, "They moved over there by crenshaw, they said it was
too many memories here." I looked over at him and laughed. "What's
funny?" he said his eyes getting big. I always thought he looked so cute
when he did that. "You still eat like a pig, look at all this." I
said pointing to his chin which had chicken grease all over it. He looked away
feeling embarrassed and wiped it with a napkin. "So you still talk to them?"
I asked continuing the conversation. "Of course, we boys till the end."
he replied smiling. I agreed and continued to eat. A couple of hours later we
were sitting remembering back to the days we all would gamble with basketball.
"Yall would always win the money, and then I would have to go home and
explain to my mom why I didn't have lunch money!" Dreux laughed taking
a sip of his soda. I fell back holding my stomach. "Stop it you're killing
me!" I cried barely being able to breathe. "Matter of fact, how about
someone on one?" He suggested standing up. I looked at him, a surprised
expression on my face. "You know I haven't played in like a century, you
gone win anyway." He gave me a sad pout, looking like a little child begging
for candy. I couldn't help but laugh, he looked pitiful. "All right one
game." I said finally. I went into one box and pulled out my basketball.
"I see you still kept the ball." he said doing one of Jarell's numbers
and taking it from me. I let him slide by me and stole it back running out the
front door.
Druex POV
I glanced over at her seeing how she was admiring the court I put in the back
of my yard. "I got tired of walking back and forth to the playground, besides
them damn kids were getting too smart for their own good." I said seeing
how she attempted to shoot but the ball just bounced off the rim. "Damn
you won't lying were you?" She looked at me and rolled her eyes. "Just
for that we going to twenty" she said retrieving the ball and sitting it
between her legs. I couldn't help but stare as she held the ball still between
the two thick caramel brown legs of hers. I let my eyes slowly slide up and
around her hips as she took the ball from in between her legs. Damn, I thought
to myself. She aint the lil tomboy that used to beat up on me, she more of a
woman. I let my eyes work they way up to her chest, which were nicely showing
themselves. "Druex!" she yelled pushing me. "I aint no hoe to
be looking at like that!" she said pulling her T-shirt up. I smiled nervously
and looked down at my feet. "My bad" There was a small silence until
she finally spoke. "You still a virgin?" she asked catching me off
guard. I looked up quickly, I could feel my face growing hot. "Mayne what
kind of question is that?" She laughed and pushed me playfully. "You
aint never did the business did you?" I turn around and picked up the ball
to shoot it. "I'm your friend and you looking at me like you want to fuck,
you got to be a virgin, now answer the question!" she demanded her voice
growing stern. "So what damn, is it a crime?" I admitted feeling more
embarrassed. That was my deepest secret and she sitting here picking on me about
it. She laughed outloud falling to the concrete. "Promise you won't tell
nobody," I said standing over her. She continued laughing not answering
me. "Promise!" I said nudging her with my foot. She looked up at me
an 'I know you aint just kick me' look on her face. She jumped up and wiped
off her shorts which were highly cut above her thighs. " I'm sorry, I promise"
she said pulling her arm around me. I gave her a pleased smile and dodged passed
her dunking the ball into the rim. "Zero to none"
Part 3
Now that I moved back which was three months from today, Dreux and I have been
hanging out since. He's really shown me a different side of him since I've been
back. We've been going to parties, clubs, and theme parks together (note to
self: He scream like a bitch). He's also helped me decorate my house, even though
he aint got no kind of sense of style. And as I speak now he over here eating
up my damn Co Co puffs. "Buy yo own cereal!" I said snatching the
box away from him. "Eh, I was reading that!" he cried his eyes following
the box. He got up pouring a bowl of milk in the sink. I ignored the fact that
he had just wasted my milk and walked into the den. I turned on the t.v. as
he came in to join me. "What you watching?" he asked sliding down
in the sofa. "You might want to cover your eyes, this can get depressing."
I joked giving him a hint on what was about to happen next. He looked on seeing
that the woman began to kiss the guy on his neck. "You real funny."
he replied looking over to me. I laughed to myself and began to play with his
ears. He jerked his head away and pushed me playfully. I climbed on top of him
pulling his hair. "Ooh Druex!" He played along resting his hands on
my hips, as I began to grind against his body. "Faster Nesa!" he screamed
laughing. I laughed outloud. "You is stupid." I said finding my place
back on the couch.
Druex POV
I put the pillow over my lap to cover the erection in my pants. Damn why now,
I thought to myself looking out the corner of my eye at Vanesa. She sat there
watching the white man get some not even suspecting that I'm over here horny
as hell! I felt myself loosen a little, and sat up straight. "You iight?"
she asked me seeing how nervous I was. "Yea, I'm cool." She turned
and placed her hand over mines. "You don't look cool." she said facing
me. I looked at her then back at the floor. "Are you a virgin?" I
asked. I was surprised that those words escaped from my mouth. She sighed and
looked away. "Naw I lost mines at sixteen, and till this day I regret every
minute of it," she paused and looked back at me, "what made you ask
that anyway?"
"I mean you were laughing at me about being a virgin I just wanted to know
if you were" I said not being able to look her in her face. She took my
face into her hands and looked me directly in the eyes. "There's nothing
to be embarrassed about, actually it's a good thing, it tells me that sex isn't
the only thing on your mind." I smiled at what she said. She kissed me
softly on the cheek. The touch of her lips against my skin sent chills down
my spine. I felt the sense of lust run through her stare as she proceeded to
kiss me again. Her lips ran across mines as her fingers tangled their way through
my hair. The temptation was too strong to resist, but I had to let go. I jumped
up and headed towards the front door. "Druex!" I heard her call from
the porch but I was already across the street. I entered the house and slammed
the door shut. "Damn, what the fuck just happened?" I asked myself
turning on the hall light. I found myself sweating hard as I took out a soda
from the fridge. As soon as I put the can up to my mouth a hand crossed my throat
and a gun took place at my head. "Oh shit!"
"Shut the fuck up!" the voice behind me shouted. Another guy came
from behind and stood infront of me. He was wearing a black ski mask and stood
a few inches taller than me. "Cough up the fuckin money!" he said
checking my pockets. The other guy echoed with a southern accent. I laughed
outloud and pulled away from who I knew was De'mario. Jarell took the mask off
laughing and greeted me with a hug. "Don't ever do that shit again, I almost
pissed in my pants!" I said pushing him. De'mario smiled and shook his
head. "What's happening young?" I sat down still shook up about the
joke they pulled over on me. "I'm straight kid, what about you?"
"Not a damn thing, still with this cat." he said pointing to Jarell
who was now digging for something in the refrigerator. "How yall get in
anyway?" I asked forgetting all about what happened with Vanesa and I.
"Yo stupid ass left the side door open." Jarell said taking a seat
across from me. He let out a laugh and took a bite off the fudge bar he had
taken from my fridge. "Guess who back in town?" I said deciding to
bring up the subject. "Who?" they asked in unison. "Vanesa."
"Fo real?" De'mario said his eyebrows raised. I nodded my head yes
as Jarell spoke. "Where she staying?"
"Across the street." I replied. I could still taste the strawberry
flavored lip gloss as I ran my tongue across my lips. "She home now?"
Jarell asked licking ice cream off the back of his hand. "Yea"
I had a feeling what he was going to say next, Lets go see her, I mocked him
in my head.
"Lets go see her" he said as if hearing my thoughts. I sucked my teeth
and got up from the table. "Yall go ahead, I just came from over there"
I said heading up stairs. "Aight we'll catch up with you later stub!"
De'mario called leaving the house.
Vanesa POV
I sat there in my bedroom thinking about what just happened. I kissed Dreux.
One of my very good friends, the boy I used to beat up when I was ten. What
was I thinking? My thoughts were interrupted by the doorbell. Maybe it's him,
maybe he came back to...I dunno but he came back. I ran down stairs turning
the corner sharply and opened the door. I gasped to see that it wasn't Druex
but my two favorite childhood friends. I screamed and hugged both at the same
time inviting them in. "What are yall doing here?" I asked surprised
to see them after nine years. "We came to see you!" De'mario answered.
We all took seats on the sofa not knowing what to say next, until Jarell spoke
up. "Gurl stand up and let me take a look at you," he said taking
my hand. I stood up and did a little model for them. "Damn gurl you got
some weight on you" De'mario said admiring my shape. Jarell just shook
his head in disbelief. "I remember you as the skinny flat chested tomboy
who used to beat our asses, how you get so thick?" I smiled and laughed.
"Well I stopped beating up lil boys like you and started something new,
I call it being a girl." I joked taking my seat again. "But look at
you Jarell, got facial hair all around here." I said touching his face.
"I remember when you were trying to grow chest hairs." De'mario apparently
thought that was so funny."What brings you back?" Jarell asked ignoring
the comment I made. "I missed my nigga's, I wasn't gone just up and leave
like that."
"Yea you did kind of leave us here without saying goodbye" De'mario
agreed trying to sound upset. I suddenly remembered how Dreux ran out of here
without saying a word. "Where's Dreux?" I asked praying that what
happened wouldn't change things between us. They both pointed to his house across
the street. "Did he say..." I began but my voice trailed off into
my thoughts. "Whats wrong?" Jarell asked seeing that something was
obviously on my mind. "Nothing" I responded behind his words. He stood
up queing De'mario that they were to take their leave. "What are you doing
tomorrow?" he asked opening the door. I gave him a disappointed, look answering
his queston. "We going to play some ball at the Y, we'll pick you up at
three." He answered leaving. I gave them both hugs and closed the door
behind them.
Part 4
I got dressed around one and pulled my hair into a back pony tail so that it
fell shoulder length. I checked myself once more before leaving. I hope this
aint too revealing, I thought to myself studying the blue and white adida outfit
I was sporting. Maybe the shorts too short? I ran to my closet searching for
some jeans to put on. The phone rang causing me to stop. "Hello?"
"Hey," Druex responded on the other end. "What's up?"
"Nothing, I'm getting ready to go ball with Jarell and D," There was
a slight silence on the other end. "Um..you wanna come over?" He asked
suddenly. "You sure?"
"Yea man." he assured. "Aight I'll be there in a couple of minutes."
I hung up the phone smiling. A couple of minutes later I was walking across
the front lawn. Before I could reach the front door he was already there to
greet me.
Dress POE
Every time I see her she gets more beautiful, I thought to myself inviting her
in. She took a seat on the couch my mother had designed for the room. "So
whets up?" She asked resting her hands on the arms of the chair. I took
a seat across from her. "About last night." I started. She looked
at me with those big light brown eyes and blinked. I turned to keep myself from
blushing. Why am I feeling this way towards her? She like a sister to me. "I
know what you're about to say" she said uncrossing her legs. I glanced
up so that I was making complete eye contact with her. "You didn't mean
for it to happen," she paused between her sentence and looked down at the
floor. "Me neither, but these past three months, you've showed a whole
new side of you...and I like it." I was surprised that she had felt any
attraction towards Mme. mean she never liked me before. But I had to agree,
I did feel something towards her, I always have, I think. So caught up in my
thoughts I didn't even notice she had came and sat beside me, her hands sliding
up and down my chest. I leaned in towards her softly placing my lips against
hers. She held back at first and then gave in, slowly letting her tongue works
its way on mine. As time passed by with our kiss I found myself leading her
to my room, our lips still making contact. This was definitely a sexual attraction
I was feeling. I wanted to do it but I wasn't sure if I should. She placed herself
horizontally on my bed as she slipped out of her shoes. Wait Man.'s bout to
lose my virginity to my childhood friend. I suddenly pushed myself from off
top of her. "Whets wrong now?" she asked. "This don't feel right,"
I said sitting beside her. Apparently she took me wrong by what I said. "It's
okay I'll lead you through it," she responded. I looked over to her. "I
can't lose my virginity to you" She cringed back as if offended. "No,
I mean you're my friend I don't know whether the feelings I feel are because
you're a friend or more than that."
Vanessa POE
I looked at him, a confused look on my face. "I thought you felt the same?"
I knew this wasn't love I was experiencing but it was a strong feeling between
he and I. I looked away embarrassed at how I had acted towards him. "I
don't know what I'm feeling right now, I just don't wanna lead you on and come
to find out later it was more of a physical attraction," he replied. He
makes a point, I thought to myself. He's smarter than I thought he was. I smiled,
glad to know he cared for my feelings. "Thanx for caring," I said
kissing his cheek. "You're welcome."
I got up ready to head for the door when I remembered my plans for today. "Reel,
D, and I are balling later, you coming?" I asked one foot out the door.
"I got to be to work in twenty," he said glancing at his watch. "Height
I'll see you around." He escorted me to the door leaving me with a hug.
I said one last good-bye before heading across the street. I looked to my right
to see a silver BMW head straight towards me. Are you gone stop? I asked to
myself. I stepped back as the car stopped infonet of me, rolling down the tented
window. "Excuse me...but can you tell me how to get to samisen avenue?"
a brownskin guy asked from inside the car. I had to admitt he was fine as hell.
I had a lil thing for guys with cornrows, especially with the lineup he had
around them. "Umm..you take a right at the next light and keep straight,"
I answered smiling. He looked me up and down and smiled. "You're cute,
thanx" he responded driving off. My eyes followed him all the way down
the street until he turned the corner. "Damn!" I said outloud attempting
to cross the street once more. I entered in to have two messages on my answering
machine. "Yo'Nesa this Jarell, just calling to let you know I'm gone be
round there in a few, so if you sleep wake yo ass up, holla at yo boy!"
I laughed to hear that he was actually coming. "Hi Vanesa, it's your auntie
Carol calling just to check up-" I stopped before she could say anything
else that would get on my nerves. A car horn beeped causing me to look out the
window. Jarell was sitting in the passengers seat of a silver convertable Lexus
waving for me to come on. I grabbed my house keys and headed for the door. "Those
your balling clothes?" he asked getting out the car to let me in. "Yea
what you expected?" He looked back. "A g-string." he joked. I
had to hit in the head for that one. I glanced around in the ride I was sitting
in. "Damn D, this whip is nice," I complimented running my hand across
the leather seats. "Yea I know!" he said pulling out the driveway.
"It cost me some good cents too"
Jarell turned around so that he was facing me. "So whats up with you and
Dreux?" he asked bringing up a subject I didn't even suspected he knew
of. "What you mean?" I responded pretending like I had no clue to
what he was referring to. "Don't act dumb Nesa, I know what went down."
he climbed in the back so he could face me directly. "Well, I told him
I was feeling him and he wasn't feeling me like that so aint nothing popping."
I answered summarizing what really happened. In that amount of time we had already
reached the Y. I got out the car disappointed in myself that I had just told
Jarell that. "Oh by the way, I really didn't have a clue to what happened,
thanx for the 411." he said sliding past me. I wanted to run after his
bony ass but that nigga was too quick. "Don't pay no attention to him."
De'mario replied pulling off his jeans. I took a second look to make sure he
wasn't stripping in public and headed to the court. "Do yall realize it's
the three of us?" I asked shooting the ball and making it. "To correct
you, my cousin coming to ball with us," Jarell answered standing up from
the bench. "Who?" I asked bouncing the ball behind my legs. "You
haven't met him yet, his name Omari..and no he don't look better than me!"
I looked up at him and rolled my eyes. "Yo conceited ass!" He laughed
walking off towards the back of the gym. A few minutes he returned in some black
shorts. "Eh Jarell, we going back to old times" I called pulling out
a fifty dollar bill. "Cough it up!" De'mario joined us throwing in
a fifty. Jarell sucked his teeth. "Lets make this more interesting."
he said throwing out two hundreds. De'mario sighed and laughed. "That's
steep dog." This nigga done lost his mind, I thought. Just then Jarell
