Spielberg has some massive box office smashes to his name and is credited as a Writer, Producer and Director. Given the extensive list of movies he has been involved with we have included only those movies where he is credited as Director in this section, and they are some of the best and most memorable movies ever made. Get the 20th Anniversary edition of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial for an example of Spielberg at his very best. Directors... ...Ridley Scott ...James Cameron ...Quentin Tarantino ...Stanley Kubrik ...Woody Allen ...Martin Scorsese ...Tim Burton ...John Ford ...Directors Cuts E.T. the Extra Terrestrial, 20th Anniversary Edition As 2002 marks the 20th Anniversary since the original release of this movie blockbuster, the film is being re-released (first time on DVD) with new scenes and enhanced visual effects amongst the host of extra features included. Elliott ( Henry Thomas ) is the detached and sometimes lonely child of single Mum Mary ( Dee Wallace ) and whilst out in the backyard he senses that something in the woods is watching him. Eventually braving the woods, Elliott discovers an ageing and friendly Alien who has been left behind by a spaceship and doesn’t know how to get home. Whilst Elliott tries to hide the alien and help him to get home, he discovers that the alien can telepathically communicate with him and they try to learn from each other. The race is then on to get E.T. home before the government scientists find him. This is a fantastic film for children and parents alike exploring the innocence of childhood with humour and emotion, whilst using great special effects to create the alien E.T. and the mother ship. Amistad Receiving several Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, this story of the Spanish slave ship Amistad tells of the dramatic political results following an onboard slave rebellion. Imprisoned on arrival in New England former slave Theodore ( Morgan Freeman ) convinces local property lawyer Baldwin (played by Matthew McConaughey ) to fight for their freedom, attempting to prove that the slaves were stolen goods because they had been kidnapped. The case becomes very high profile and the President becomes involved as the decision goes to the Supreme Court. A.I. Artificial Intelligence This movie began as a long term project of Stanley Kubrik’s which, after his death, passed to Spielberg . It’s Pinnochio style is based on a Brian Aldiss short story written in 1969, 'Super-Toys Last All Summer Long'. Set in the future where mankind is reliant on robots, David ( Haley Joel Osment ) is a prototype robot, being the first of his kind to be able to experience love. When Henry ( Sam Robards ) and his wife Monica ( Frances O’Connor ) finally accept that their comatose son is unlikely to wake up they decide to adopt David. All is well until their natural son suddenly recovers and David is abandoned and becomes determined to become a real boy. The story of his adventures follow (with an excellent performance by Jude Law as fellow robot Gigolo Joe) but rather than resulting in the sentimental happy ending we might expect it crosses into examining the darker side of human existence and the result is unpredictable and eccentric. Jurassic Park Graced by state-of-the-art special effects this action adventure was a massive blockbuster smash. Dr Alan Grant ( Sam Neill ) and Dr Ellie Sattler ( Laura Dern ) are invited to an island off the coast of Costa Rica by millionaire John Hammond ( Richard Attenborough ) to preview his new amusement park. Using DNA cloned from pre-historic insects Hammond has recreated living dinosaurs and the Doctor’s, accompanied by Hammonds two grandchildren and mad scientist Ian Malcolm ( Jeff Goldblum ), take the computer controlled tour of the island. Aided by an unscrupulous employee and a tropical storm the dinosaurs rage completely out of control leaving the visiting party stranded. Even if the plot is predictable this is well worth a look for the very special special effects. The Lost World: Jurassic Park This sequel sees millionaire John Hammond revealing to Ian Malcolm that whilst nearly everything was destroyed on his island, there was another island where engineers had been working in secret and the dinosaurs had started to breed. Malcolm declines Hammonds’ invitation to observe the dinosaurs but is forced to reconsider when he learns that his girlfriend Sarah Harding ( Julianne Moore ) is already there. On arrival he is also joined by a camera crew and a world class wild game hunter and so the adventure begins. If you loved the first one, then you'll definately love this too. Hook A Steven Spielberg retake of the children’s fantasy with an all star cast in which Peter Pan ( Robin Williams ) has become a grown up. Julia Roberts plays the enchanting Tinkerball who encourages Peter to remember who he really is, with the help of Granny Wendy ( Maggie Smith ), and take flight once more. After the evil Captain Hook ( Dustin Hoffman ) kidnaps his children Peter is forced to remember his happy thoughts and return to Never Never Land to rescue them. Saving Private Ryan A story about a beach landing in the second world war, famed for its gory realism. The 24 minute depiction of a D Day landing faced with fierce German artillery fire is as unforgettable as it is gruesome. Following the eventual success of the invasion, after a devastating loss of life, Captain John Miller ( Tom Hanks ) is given an assignment to rescue Private Ryan ( Matt Damon ), the only surviving brother of 4, to return him home to his family safe and sound. The Captain and his men set out to complete their mission under a shadow of doubt about its merit only to eventually find Private Ryan unwilling to return with them until the bridge he is protecting is safe. Stunning and realistic battle scenes and critically acclaimed performances ( Tom Hanks was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars) this is Spielberg at his best. The Color Purple Based on the prize winning Alice Walker novel, this tells the story of Celie ( Whoopi Goldberg ) from 1909 to 1949. Celie is separated from her beloved sister Nettie ( Akousa Busia ) and virtually sold by marriage to her brutal farmer husband Albert ( Danny Glover ). The only source of sanctuary for Celie is the letters she writes to her sister Nettie, but Albert hides Netties’ replies leading the distraught Celie to believe she is dead. Inspired and strengthened by her friendship with Sofia ( Oprah Winfrey ) and her husbands mistress Shug ( Margaret Avery ), Celie eventually finds the letters from Nettie and leaves her husband in search of a new life. Nominated for 11 Oscars, this film is a genuine tear-jerker. Close Encounters of the Third Kind A career defining movie for Spielberg and a sci-fi classic about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Richard Dreyfuss plays Roy Neary, an electrical repair man who witnesses a UFO whilst out on a repair job and has the ‘sunburn’ to prove it. Neary becomes obsessed with finding an explanation for this much to the scepticism of his wife and family. The obsession leads him to single mother Jillian ( Melinda Dillon ) who’s son disappeared during her UFO experience, and Claude Lacombe (played by French filmmaker Francois Truffaut ) who believes that music could be the tool of communication with the aliens. The final scenes of the movie, which include the arrival of the ‘mother ship’ are some of the most memorable in movie history. Jaws The shark attack movie based on the Peter Benchley novel which started the trend for summer blockbusters and put people off swimming in the sea! Police Chief Brody ( Roy Schneider ) is alarmed when body parts of a missing girl are washed ashore at his beach resort home of Amity Island. Fighting with the local mayor Vaughn ( Murray Hamilton ) who is trying to protect the fourth of July holiday trade, Brody fails to get the town on shark alert. To compromise the Mayor orders the town fisherman to catch the shark and the town breathes a sigh of relief when a shark is caught. However visiting shark expert Hooper ( Richard Dreyfuss ) believes the attacks were caused by a much larger great white shark. Two attacks later and Hooper and Brody decide to take on the great white themselves with the help of local fisherman Quint ( Robert Shaw ). Tesco.com © Copyright 2002 last updated
