The Warring States era, was one of China's most romantic periods in it's history. Yet the story 'Chum Chun Gei' (A Step Into the Past), also occurred in this most beautiful and colorful time when heroes came forth in large numbers. The story begins in the future world of the 21st century. The elite of the SPEC OPS, Hong Siu Lung (Louis Koo) was very witty and had out of the ordinary capabilities. He was chosen to take part in a secret project, which has been researched for many years until finally succeeding in creating the first time machine.

Hong prepared to launch his journey into the time planned, which was to the year that the king of Chun, Ying Jing (Raymond Lam Fung) ascended the throne in the city of Ham Yeung. But the time machine had an unexpected error and Hong was sent to the country of Jiu, one year before Ying became Emperor. Hong was alone as he went through the Jiu country. He decided to find Ying, who was jailed in Jiu and was living a hostage's life, and to aid him in establishing a great industry so that he could return back to the future. Hong, with many hardships, headed towards the city of Hon Dan to search for him. Along the way, he helped Jiu country's Wu family general Tou Fong defeat a thief named Fui Wu and gained his appreciation as well as his daughter Wu Ting Fong's (Jessica Hsuan). Yet, at the same time, he also provoked the jealousy of the man pursuing Fong, the swordsman Lin Jun (Kong Wah).

The king of Jiu learned that Ngai country's Sun Ling Gwan obtained the weapons book written by the skillful craftsman Gung Su Bun of Lou country. In order to guard against Ngai country creating powerful weapons to invade them, on one hand the king had Hong escort the third Princess Jiu Sin to Ngai to marry the king as his concubine and to show the friendly relations between the two countries. Actually, the Jiu king ordered Hong to wait for a chance to steal the book. He succeeded in doing so and escaped from Ngai back to Hon Dan. Because of this, he was placed in an important position by the Jiu king but was hated to the bone by Jiu Muk. Muk tried every means to harm Hong but was fruitless. Hong discovered, however, that Ying was a prisoner in Muk's mansion. His mother, Ju Gei had also become Muk's slave. Using the relationship with the Wu's, Hong obtained a connection with Chun country's Lui Bat Wai. Lui, who wanted to consolidate his power, ordered Hong to think of a way to bring Ju and Ying back to Chun. Hong managed to save Ju and from her learned that the Ying that was jailed was a fake. The real Ying had been secretly sent to a poor family to be raised.

However, after Hong's investigation, he found that the true Ying had died in the chaos of the war. Hong was faced with a predicament, but to survive he decided to have Sin's cousin, Jiu Pun impersonate Ying. With the assistance of the Wu's, Hong succeeded in getting Ju and Pun out of Jiu country and headed straight towards Ham Yeung. Jong Seung Wong had died, and Pun (impersonating Ying) succeeded him. Due to Pun still not an adult yet, he did not get an official coronation. Lui became the regent and most of the power went to him. He also began to secretly conspire against Hong. Hong, watching as Pun became more cruel and merciless in his actions, realized he was no longer the Pun he once knew but felt only helplessness. He decided that after helping Pun get rid of Lui and Lou Oi, he would retire to the country. Who knew that Pun, to protect the secret of his birth, decided to kill Hong?

In a moment of time three different forces, each with their own devilish thoughts turned the coronation ceremony into all the more dangerous.
