Man Keung (Donald Chow Yun Fat) is earnest and patriotic and is jailed for taking part
in the student movement. After his release from prison, he changes his motives
towards fame and fortune promising to make a name for himself. Keung gets
wrapped up in a triad battle and is enrolled by Law Chi into the gang where he
meets Ding Lik (Lui Leung Wai)
who came from the slums. The two become great friends and make a name for
themselves in the triad society. In an evening party, the two help out Fung
Ching Ching (Gigi Chiu) who is the daughter of a leader in both triad and social
status Fung King Yiu (Lau Dan) and they are invited to enter his organization
and become respected in their own right. On the other hand, Ching falls in love
with Keung at first sight, but Keung will not reciprocate her feelings for fear
of forsaking her, even though he loves her dearly. The reservations between the
two result in resentment for the rest of their lives and
create a complicated love triangle incorporating Lik.
Although Keung loves his fame and fortune, his patriotism is still strong and he
discovers that Yiu is dealing with the Japanese to wreak havoc on his
countrymen. In his anger, he sabotages Yiu's plans and he loses a lot. When Yiu
finds out the truth, he places a death
threat on Keung. He is forced to leave everything he has worked for and escape
to Hong Kong. When he arrives in Hong
Kong, Keung luckily meets Wong Tai and her
family who are poor, but look after him all the same. As a result, Keung falls
in love with Tai and decides he is tired of the pursuit of wealth, choosing to
live in Hong Kong and form a family and live an ordinary life with Tai. However, Yiu will not let him go so easily. One day, when Keung returns home, he finds
that his family have been murdered. In his pain and sorrow, he vows to return to
Shanghai and destroy the Fungs...
