Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Cast a Giant Shadow

The warrior chieftain Maceus (Stig Eldred) returns from battle with his men to learn that Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) has slain his brother Demetrius. Enraged, Maceus vows he will kill the son of Zeus to avenge his brother's death. Meanwhile, the unsuspecting Hercules comes upon Typhon (Glenn Shadix), a clumsy but goodhearted giant who has been held captive in a cave by Hera for more than one hundred years. He frees Typhon and together they head off to Plinth, where Hercules has arranged to meet Iolaus (Michael Hurst). That night, however, Maceus and his men find Iolaus and take him prisoner, determined to learn Hercules' whereabouts. Despite repeated beatings by Maceus' thugs, Iolaus lies to protect his friend and leads his captors off in the wrong direction.

Typhon causes quite a stir when he and Hercules arrive in Plinth. At first panicked by the sight of the giant, the villagers soon see he is friendly, playful and wonderful with their children. While helping beautiful young Breanna (Fiona Mogridge), her ailing father Septus (Bruce Allpress), and the other villagers repair their meeting hall, Hercules is stunned to learn that Typhon's wife is Echidna (Bridget Hoffman), the mother of all monsters. When he shows surprise, the gentle giant explains that it was Hera's evil intervention which caused his essentially good wife to hurt people. Hercules is deeply troubled that sooner or later, he will have to tell Typhon that he was forced to seal Echidna in her dark lair forever.

Meanwhile, Iolaus, who has led Maceus and his men on a wild goose chase, escapes from his captors by throwing himself into a river, swimming to shore, and diving into a mud patch to hide. But before he can slip off unnoticed, Hera sends down a lightning bolt which clearly outlines his location. Maceus and his chief lieutenant Pylon (Bruce Hopkins) lead their gang in hot pursuit. Iolaus is only steps ahead of them when he arrives in Plinth to warn Hercules. Together, they drive off Maceus and his men. Now even more determined to exact revenge, Maceus receives a vision of Echidna through Hera and leads his men to Echidna's lair, which still lies buried under tons of rubble. As they wait at the blocked entrance, Hera triggers a tremendous explosion which unseals the cave. Maceus sends a frightened traveler to tell Hercules that Hera has set Echidna free, certain that the son of Zeus will walk into his trap.

When the traveler arrives in Plinth to warn Hercules and finds him together with Typhon, he inadvertently reveals to the giant that Echidna was trapped in her cave by Hercules, where she has been sealed up for some time. When Hercules tries to explain why he was forced to battle her, Typhon storms off to rejoin his wife. Knowing they must prevent the mother of all monsters from unleashing her wrath, Hercules and Iolaus set out for her lair. Typhon arrives first, but before Maceus is able to enlist him in his evil plot, Hercules and Iolaus appear and begin fighting off Maceus and his warriors. Typhon finally realizes that his wife is being controlled by the wicked Hera, as were his children whom Hercules was forced to destroy. Hercules enters the cave and faces both Maceus and Echidna, who team up to kill him. In the free-for-all, Maceus falls victim to Echidna's deadly tentacles as Hercules deftly manages to elude them. Just as she closes in, however, Typhon strides in with Iolaus to announce he's finally home. When Echidna learns that Hera kept her beloved Typhon imprisoned to incite her hatred, she realizes she's been duped by the evil goddess and vows to turn over a new leaf. As she and her husband embrace, Hercules and Iolaus slip away.
