Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

The Sword of Veracity

Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) journey to the town of Pluribus where they are surprised to find their longtime friend Amphion (Brad Carpenter) -- formerly a brilliant warrior -- preaching peaceful resistance against the local tyrant Trachis (Paul Minifie). Minutes after their arrival, Amphion is arrested for the murder of a local couple and taken into custody, while damning "evidence" is planted in his home. During the ensuing public tribunal, Trachis tells the assembled crowd that Amphion is only pretending to be a man of peace -- that in fact, his prisoner murdered innocent women and children during his days as a soldier. When Amphion refuses to defend himself against the tyrant's charges, he is sentenced to death two days hence. Baffled by this turn of events, Hercules and Iolaus soon learn the reason for their friend's silence -- though not personally responsible, Amphion has never forgiven himself for a tragedy which occurred during his last military campaign. Determined to stop their friend from becoming a martyr, Hercules and Iolaus vow to Trachis that they will discover the truth by retrieving the legendary Sword of Veracity hidden in the Thalian Caves. As Trachis knows, exposure to the blade of the Sword renders one incapable of lying. As the two men leave, they are followed secretly by Trachis' soldiers whose orders are to kill them if they succeed in their search.

As Hercules and Iolaus begin the daunting task of finding the right cave among hundreds of possibilities, they are joined by Leah (Kim Michalis), who claims to be the Hestial virgin they need to help them in their quest. That night, as the three rest from their exhausting day, Iolaus struggles with his strong attraction to the beautiful young woman. The next morning, Leah points them towards one particular cave and a sudden beam of light reflecting off a distant peak confirms her choice. As they approach, however, a ferocious Minotaur jumps in their path, blocking the entrance. While Hercules and the savage creature engage in a fierce battle Iolaus and Leah sneak inside the cave. In a large cavern at the foot of an altar to Hestia, they find a chest filled with swords of all shapes and sizes. The two begin telling hilarious lies while holding each one in order to identify which is the Sword of Veracity. Meanwhile, Hercules manages to trick the Minotaur into charging off a cliff and rejoins his friends. Before they find the right sword, however, two more sword-wielding Minotaurs attack. Hercules and Iolaus defend themselves in a spectacular round of swordplay and when the Minotaurs are tricked into stabbing each other, the monsters' bodies suddenly evaporate.

Finally, Hercules, Iolaus and Leah retrieve the Sword of Veracity and hurry back towards Pluribus, where Lycus (Danny Lineham) and Amphion's other supporters have been rounded up as hostages by Trachis' men. On the way, however, the trio is ambushed by a band of Trachis' soldiers led by the ruthless Epius (Kelly Greene). After Leah surprises her companions by handling herself splendidly in battle, she reveals her real identity as that of Amphion's fiancee. Continuing on to Pluribus, the three arrive just as Amphion agrees to do whatever Trachis wants in order to save the lives of his supporters, who are to be burned at the stake. Hercules, wielding the Sword of Veracity, faces Trachis, who now cannot deny that he framed Amphion for the murders in order to get rid of him. Trachis tries to escape but is captured by Hercules. Leah, now holding the Sword of Veracity, threatens to kill the tyrant, who was responsible for the death of her own parents, but ultimately cannot bring herself to do it. Instead, the entire town turns out to celebrate the marriage of Amphion and Leah as Hercules and Iolaus set out to return the Sword of Veracity to the Thalian Caves.
