Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Once a Hero

Shortly after Iolaus (Michael Hurst) arrives in Corinth to attend a reunion of Jason (Jeffrey Thomas) and the Argonauts, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo), also on his way to the festivities, saves a drunk from being mugged by a band of thugs. When the man passes out, Hercules is shocked to see he's none other than King Jason himself. Carrying him to the banquet hall, Hercules watches as Jason regains consciousness and is confronted by Marcus (Lathan Gaines), the chief regent of Corinth, who arrives to warn Castor (Peter Feeney) that he won't tolerate any more of the King's public displays. Hercules learns from Castor that Jason's drinking began when he left Medea for the beautiful Glauce, whereupon Medea murdered her and Jason's children. The reunion is suddenly interrupted when a handful of warriors wearing the emblem of a red peacock eye stage a surprise raid. As Hercules, Iolaus, Jason and the other Argonauts defend themselves in a fierce battle, Jason catches a glimpse of the warriors' leader, a Black-Masked Demon, just as he escapes with the Golden Fleece.

The following morning, Hercules rallies the Argonauts to go after Fleece. Iolaus tells them he believes the thieves are a cult of Hera-worshipping fanatics called the Blood-Eyes. When Jason reveals he saw their Demon leader fleeing, the Argonauts are more than a bit skeptical and insist that Hercules be the expedition leader. Hercules accepts on the condition that Jason navigate the Argo. Boarding the ship, Phoebe (Willa O'Neill), the feisty young daughter of an Argonaut who died mysteriously, demands to take her father's place, which Hercules allows. Meanwhile, Marcus plots with one of Hera's priestesses, who gives him a small pouch assuring him the contents will kill Hercules and all the Argonauts even if they return.

Shortly after setting sail, Artemus (Edward Campbell) discovers the dead body of Otus (Mark Nua) below decks. Certain that Otus was murdered but not sure by whom, Hercules waits to see what develops as the Argo follows the warriors' ship to an isolated island. There he and the men track the Blood-Eyes inland to their camp. Jason surprises his comrades by insisting on leading the charge. Despite Hercules' warnings, the Argonauts allow themselves to be split up as they pursue the fleeing warriors and Jason ends up alone in a clearing where he comes face to face with the Masked Demon.

He barely manages to fend off the Demon's assault before Hercules intervenes. The Demon vanishes into the forest as the battle-weary Argonauts regroup at the camp. Artemus returns carrying the fatally wounded Valerus (Anthony Ray Parker) and lashes out at Jason, blaming him for leading them into a trap. Hercules tries to console Jason, who is overwhelmed by guilt and self-doubt. The next morning, the Argonauts follow a group of Blood-Eyes carrying the Fleece into a temple deep inside an active volcano. A huge stone door shuts behind them, trapping them inside with a dozen warriors and the Masked Demon. When Hercules reveals that the Demon is actually Castor, Castor whips off his mask and admits that he hates Jason and the other Argonauts for stealing the honor and glory he believes are rightfully his. A vicious battle between the Blood-Eyes and Argonauts ensues as a sudden tremor shakes the mountain. Hercules fights his way to the door and Jason grabs the Fleece from Castor, but releases it in order to save Artemus from a deadly attack. Castor exits into a tunnel carrying the Fleece just before another huge tremor hits and the tunnel caves in. Hercules manages to open the door just in time to save the Argonauts from being engulfed in molten lava. Arriving back in Corinth, the Argonauts are astonished to find that Castor, whom they believed to be dead, has returned with the Golden Fleece and is about to be crowned king. Marcus orders Jason to abdicate the throne, which Jason agrees to do if Castor is able to defeat him in one last fight. Though Castor is the better swordsman, Jason rises to the challenge and gains the upper hand. Opening the priestess' bag, Marcus then pulls out handfuls of dragon's teeth and hurls them into the fire, releasing nine skeleton warriors who leap out of the flames to attack. Hercules, Iolaus, Jason and his fellow Argonauts join in an epic battle to retrieve the Golden Fleece and are once again united in victory.
