Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Not Fade Away

As they return to their hometown of Thebes, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) happen upon a group of villagers desperately fighting a fire that threatens the year's harvest. Hercules cleverly uses a canister of oil to lead the flames away from the village grain silos, outsmarting the very elements themselves. During the celebration that follows, however, the happiness of the villagers reminds Hercules of his own loneliness. He decides to return home to his mother Alcmene (Liddy Holloway) and stepfather Jason (Jeffrey Thomas) so that he might visit the graves of his wife and children. Meanwhile, Iolaus, who has remained behind in the village, is startled when a frightened peasant rushes into town telling stories of an invincible woman warrior who has terrorized a band of freedom fighters in one of Hera's temples. Much to his dismay, the female killing machine the man describes sounds like the dreaded Enforcer (Karen Sheperd). Iolaus sets out for the temple where he finds the Enforcer II (Cynthia Rothrock), a new and improved version of Hera's original assassin, whose essence is fire and whose only desire is to kill Hercules. When the two square off in battle, she quickly defeats Iolaus, leaving him mortally wounded. Determined to warn Hercules of this new danger, however, Iolaus summons his last bit of strength and manages to reach Alcmene and Jason's house, where he dies in Hercules' arms.

Refusing to accept the death of his friend, Hercules carries Iolaus to the Other Side to seek Hades' intervention. The god of the underworld tells them that in order to return Iolaus to life, Hercules must defeat Hera's Enforcer II by sundown the following day. Warned about the awesome power of the new Enforcer, Hercules reluctantly agrees to team up with the original Enforcer, a beautiful killing machine made of water, who at one time -- under Hera's evil influence -- wanted to kill Hercules as much as her fiery counterpart. Stuck in the underworld because of her lack of a soul, the Enforcer must help Hercules carry out his mission in order to pass into the Elysian fields, the final resting place of all honorable warriors.

Hercules and the Enforcer return to Earth, where they seek to hide Alcmene and Jason in a nearby cave. The Enforcer II follows them inside and begins melting the stone walls of the cavern by shooting fireballs from her mouth. In moments, the entire cave collapses and the new Enforcer charges outside, believing Hercules is dead. With the help of the original Enforcer, however, Hercules digs Jason and Alcmene out of the rubble, and props up the cave walls just long enough for everyone to escape.

When the group emerges, they are immediately attacked by Hera's troops, who have been spreading destruction throughout the province. During the ensuing battle, the Enforcer II makes off with Alcmene. The original Enforcer follows her successor into a barn, where the two killing machines face each other in an epic battle. The original Enforcer fights bravely but, in the end, is no match for her enemy, and expires as the water that is her life's essence is vaporized by the new Enforcer's searing heat. Wounded in the battle, the Enforcer II retreats to a forge, where Hercules corners her. There he uses a bellows to blow one of her own fireballs back down her throat, instantly incinerating her. With the new Enforcer vanquished, Iolaus, who has finally made peace with his estranged father Skouros (Bruce Allpress) in the underworld, is free to return to the land of the living. Skouras, in turn, is able to enter the Elysian Fields, accompanied by the original Enforcer, who has now earned the right to an honorable resting place.
