Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Monster Child in the Promised Land

Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) are enjoying a leisurely stroll, casually discussing the virtues of family, when a messenger approaches with an urgent announcement: Typhon (Glenn Shadix), the gentle giant, and Echidna (Bridget Hoffman), the mother of all monsters, have just welcomed a new addition to their family. As the two heroes discuss the news and prepare to visit their friends, they are observed by Klepto (Grant Heslov), a small-time thief, who jostles Iolaus and snatches the birth announcement from his belt. Aware of the value of one of Echidna's monster-children and eager to prove his worth to the brutal warlord Bluth (Tony Wood), Klepto sets out to kidnap Echidna's new baby. Passing Hercules and Iolaus on the way to Echidna's cave, he is able to slow down their progress by warning the ruffians at a local inn of the approach of two men who are on the prowl for their women. When Hercules and Iolaus arrive, a terrific fight breaks out. The two make quick work of their attackers but the bar wenches, now excited by the idea of being chased by handsome strangers, are a different story. As Hercules and Iolaus exit the inn with a gaggle of barmaids hot on their trail, Klepto continues on his journey and reaches Echidna's cave.

Presenting the stolen birth announcement and claiming to be a friend of Hercules, Klepto is welcomed into Echidna and Typhon's lair. There he plays with Echidna's child, a squid-like creature named Obie, and offers to care for him while Echidna takes a nap and Typhon goes for a walk. Finally alone with the little monster, he throws him into the baby carriage and makes for the hills, where he plans to turn Obie over to the evil Bluth. Realizing they have been set up, Hercules and Iolaus arrive just as Echidna notices the child is missing. Iolaus stays with the furious mother of all monsters while Hercules and Typhon set out to find the baby. That night, Klepto almost loses Obie when he allows the child to wander off and tumble over the side of a cliff. When he retrieves the happy baby who is saved by a protruding branch, he grudgingly admits to himself that he's beginning to like the little monster.

Following Klepto's trail, Hercules and Typhon reach a fork in the road and decide to split up. Meanwhile, Klepto arrives at a pilgrims camp and tells one of Bluth's henchmen to bring news of the kidnapping to the warlord. Bluth, who has already been promised greater power and riches by Hera's head archer (Rebecca Clark) if he can kidnap Obie for Hera, decides to grab the little monster himself. By the time Hercules and Typhon catch up with Klepto, the thief tearfully reveals that Bluth has already made off with the child. Hercules and Typhon track Obie, with a remorseful Klepto in tow, to Bluth's hideout. They find the henchman, who is determined to turn Obie into a killing machine, viciously goading the poor creature who has been locked in a cage. Mad with Bluth's taunting, Obie attacks Hercules, who does all he can to avoid the monster's flailing tentacles. Meanwhile, Hera's head archer, who has been dispatched to insure that Echidna's newest child will serve the evil goddess, confronts Echidna in her lair. Iolaus is knocked unconscious during the ensuing fight, but comes to just as the archer is taking aim at Echidna's heart. Leaping to deflect the shot, he knocks the bow from its owner's hands and uses it to free Echidna, who had been pinned by the archer's bolos. Back at Bluth's headquarters, Obie has reverted to his childlike ways, having been convinced by Hercules and his dad that Bluth is the real enemy. Bluth attacks Hercules and ends up impaled on his own sword. In the end, Echidna is overjoyed when her baby arrives home in Typhon's arms. She even forgives the reformed Klepto, whose growing affection for the child has become obvious.
