In a temple to Ares, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) battle a group of warriors about to sacrifice a princess on the altar. As Hercules takes on the last few men, Iolaus confronts their leader, a sadistic warlord named Gravus (Dean Stewart). But before Iolaus can lay a hand on him, Gravus drops dead at his feet. Ares (Kevin Smith) suddenly appears and angrily tells Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) that Gravus' murderer will join him in the Underworld. With that, Ares draws his sword on Iolaus. Hercules attacks Ares and in the heat of battle, the two crash through the temple wall. Their fight is cut short, however, when lightning strikes Ares' sword. A vortex opens up in the middle of the field surrounding them and a frightened man tears out of it. The fugitive runs smack into Iolaus, who gasps when he sees the man's face. Four soldiers on horseback suddenly emerge and mistaking Iolaus for the running man, club him, lift him into a saddle and head back into the vortex, which collapses behind them. Ares laughs mockingly as he spins the fugitive from the vortex around so that Hercules can see him -- he's a dead ringer for Iolaus.
Meanwhile, Iolaus is dragged through a castle and dumped at the feet of a king called the Sovereign (Kevin Sorbo), a dead ringer for Hercules except for his beard and malevolent expression. The Sovereign cold-cocks Iolaus, who later wakes up in Iolaus 2's (Michael Hurst) bedroom in a jester's outfit. Back in the other dimension, Iolaus 2, a much more wimpy version of Iolaus, sees Hercules and becomes extremely agitated, lapsing into a desperate comedy routine. Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings) arrives to tell Hercules that Zeus is dying and learns that Iolaus has disappeared into a "gateway" to another world, which was somehow opened up by Zeus' lightning bolts. Hercules tells her to explain to Zeus that in order to help him, Hercules will need Zeus' help to get through to the parallel universe where Iolaus is trapped. Meanwhile, when Iolaus escapes his locked room, he discovers that the Sovereign is about to be married and that he is to be the best man.
As Iolaus views the dead body of Gravus 2 (Dean Stewart) in the parallel universe, Iolaus 2 and Hercules are looking at the body of Gravus in the other dimension. Iolaus and Hercules simultaneously realize that there must be one of everybody in each of the two worlds and that when one dies, the other dies also. Iolaus finds out that the Sovereign is marrying the queen of the gods who, in the cross-over world, is Aphrodite 2 (Alexandra Tydings), a modest and sensitive young woman who is marrying the Sovereign only because it's the only way to obtain the cure for the poison that is killing Zeus.
Next, Iolaus is shocked by the arrival of Xena 2 (Lucy Lawless), who starts to wrestle and giggle with the Sovereign as if they're lovers. It turns out that she and the king are killing Zeus so that they can create their own "master race" and rule the world. Ares 2 (Kevin Smith) now enters the picture but in the parallel world, he's the god of love, not war. By now, Iolaus is losing it. He finally vents his rage at the Sovereign when a prisoner is executed purely for sport, and the Sovereign locks him up. Down in the dungeon, Iolaus encounters the super-tough, wild-eyed Joxer 2 (Ted Raimi), who turns out to be the leader of the freedom fighters. Joxer 2 produces a hidden knife and urges Iolaus to assassinate the Sovereign during the wedding ceremony. After much agonizing, Iolaus agrees. In the alternate universe, as Iolaus 2 finishes telling Hercules about the Sovereign's evil plans, the two realize that if the Sovereign is killed, Hercules will also die. At that thought, Hercules begins destroying Ares' temple to get his attention. An angry Ares shows up and the two begin to fight each other.
Back in the cross-over world, Iolaus apologizes and is freed in time for the wedding. Iolaus thrusts his knife at the Sovereign during the exchange of vows, but the king deflects his attack and a furious fight ensues. Joxer "2" and his rebels escape from the dungeon and join in the battle, during which Xena 2's chakram-pendant flies off her neck. Iolaus grabs it before she does and discovers that it contains the Hind blood she and the Sovereign have been using to poison Zeus. Meanwhile, as Hercules and Ares continue their battle, a huge lightning bolt crackles and the vortex suddenly reappears. In the parallel universe, after Iolaus decks the hooded executioner who turns out to be Gabrielle 2 (Renee O'Connor), he sees the vortex appear and races outside. He quickly jumps into it, pendant in hand. The Sovereign dives in after him. At the same time, Hercules and Iolaus 2 jump in. The four men grapple with each other until it looks as if the vortex is about to collapse on them. Iolaus, Iolaus 2, and Hercules all manage to exit to their proper universes, but the Sovereign is left trapped inside the collapsed vortex.
