Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Prodigal Sister

Dawn is just breaking but the village of Sarna is already in total chaos. As whole families run for their lives, a father finishes tattooing a bird on the wrist of his six-year-old son, Ruun (Dean O'Gorman). Pulling him close, he asks the boy to promise that if anything should happen to him, Ruun will take care of his little sister. The worried child gives his word. Suddenly, pandemonium breaks loose and the boy's father must defend himself against attacking Amazon warriors. As Ruun tries to protect his sister, one of the Amazons grabs her and kicks him to the ground. Dazed, he looks up to see a wild red-haired warrior kill both his father and mother. As his sister desperately reaches for him, the warrior knocks him unconscious with the hilt of her sword, permanently blinding him.

It is 13 years later when Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) crosses paths with Ruun, now a handsome 19-year-old. Ruun is chained to a line of slaves being herded along a boat dock when Hercules shows up and confronts the slave trader, informing him that slavery is illegal in the province. The angry trader orders his guards to attack, but Hercules makes quick work of them, getting help from blind young Ruun, who courageously takes on one of the guards. Hercules frees the slaves and as he reaches out to shake Ruun's hand, he notices the bird tattoo on the young man's wrist. Ruun confides that all he wants to do is return to Sarna to find his long-lost sister. Hercules tells him he's headed that way to check out rumors of Amazon trouble and invites Ruun to join him. The young man accepts, revealing that it was Amazons who murdered his parents and kidnapped his sister many years before. As the two prepare to leave, Hercules runs i nto the Amazon Queen Ephiny (Danielle Cormack) and her Centaur son, Xenan (Reece Rodewyk). Ephiny informs Hercules that a few outlaw bands have broken off from the Amazon nation and are causing trouble.

Meanwhile, a tribe of these renegade Amazons is preparing to attack another village in their ongoing campaign to reclaim ancestral lands. 17-year-old Lucenne (Marama Jackson) is trying to sharpen her not-so-keen warrior skills with the help of her confident and battle-savvy Amazon "sister" Siri (Katrina Browne). Mayem (Tina Cleary), the same red-haired warrior who killed Ruun's parents, expresses doubts to Siri about Lucenne's readiness for battle and during the village raid the next day, Lucenne is, in fact, mortally wounded.

When Hercules and Ruun arrive in Sarna, they meet Johe (Danny Lineham), a middle-aged villager who remembers Ruun but cannot help him regarding the whereabouts of his sister. As Lucenne's funeral is taking place back at the Amazon camp, Ruun approaches the spot where his parents were killed and cries out in pain as he remembers the image of the red-haired woman who slaughtered them. Hercules soon learns that the renegade Amazons are heading towards Sarna and he helps the villagers prepare for their attack. During the battle, Siri sneaks up on Ruun and catches him off guard, but he quickly recovers. As he skillfully wields his staff to avoid her sword, the staff catches a clasp on Siri's gauntlet and pulls it off, revealing a bird tattoo on her wrist. Siri redoubles her attack, disarms Ruun and is about to move in for the kill when Hercules arrives and stops her, noticing the bird tattoo on her wrist before she flees back into the woods. Hercules breaks the terrible news to Ruun that the Amazon who almost killed him was his sister.

Prodded by Mayem, Siri sets out to kill Hercules, but he easily evades her attack. When the two come face to face, Hercules tells her that Ruun is her brother. Siri refuses to believe him, but agrees to meet with Ruun alone later that night. When she appears, however, she has a half-dozen armed Amazons with her. Siri is clearly torn when she sees Ruun's tattooed wrist and decides to drag him and Hercules back to the Amazon camp alive. When Siri tells Mayem about Ruun's matching tattoo and begins questioning the story Mayem has told her about being abandoned by her real parents, Mayem becomes angry. But Siri insists on holding a Fire Stakes ceremony the next day to find out who is lying. Hercules volunteers to take Ruun's place by fighting two of the Amazon's best warriors -- Mayem and Siri -- simultaneously. A brutal battle ensues, fought on planks above flaming stakes. When Mayem inadvertently shouts out the same curse she did when she murdered Ruun and Siri's parents, Ruun immediately recognizes her as the killer. And when Mayem fails to deny it, Siri realizes she's been betrayed. In the end, Mayem falls to her death and brother and sister are reunited.
