Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

...And Fancy Free

In the town of Rhumba, the dance capital of Greece, nerdy nine-year-old Althea (Raechel Murgatroyd) watches with great excitement as a couple wins the Panathenaia, a ballroom dance competition. Oena (Emily Jackson), the niece of the town magistrate Asterius (Stuart Devenie), and her gang of friends, tease Althea mercilessly about her desire to be a dancer.... Ten years later, 19-year-old Althea (Willa O'Neill), still clumsy and in pigtails, runs smack into Hercules (Kevin Sorbo). After an awkward exchange, Althea runs off, accidentally dropping her necklace. When Hercules goes after her to return it, he finds her in the town square where he witnesses the awful treatment she is once again enduring from Oena and her gang. It is Panathenaia time again and the group is taunting her for wanting to compete, cruelly reminding her that she needs a partner in order to enter. Upon hearing Oena's insults, Hercules volunteers to be Althea's dance partner.

Shocked by his offer, an excited Althea takes Hercules home and convinces her father Elis (Geoff Snell) to let him stay for a few days in the barn. Unbeknownst to Elis, Althea and Hercules enter the Panathenaia. When Oena complains to her Uncle Asterius about the lack of good dance partners, fearing that Hercules and Althea will win the competition, Asterius assures her that he is taking care of Hercules. Meanwhile, Hercules and Althea go in search of dance lessons, quickly realizing that they're going to need all the help they can get. Unfortunately, they are turned down by one school after another. Just as they're about to give up, they come upon the eccentric widow Twanky (Michael Hurst), the Mistress of Music, who agrees to be their dance instructor. As she teaches them about rhythm, one of Asterius' henchmen spies on them from outside. When he reports on what he has seen, Asterius decides he must chat with Hercules himself.

Hercules is summoned to Asterius' quarters. When he arrives, the magistrate invites him to become one of the celebrity judges at the Panathenaia, which would mean that he would have to withdraw from the competition as a contestant. Hercules declines and leaves. A short while later, he finds Althea waiting for him. In a tender but awkward moment, the young woman confesses her love for him and Hercules must let her down easy. The next morning, as Hercules and Althea leave the farmhouse and start heading downhill toward a rope bridge, a huge stack of logs that Hercules had tied together with ropes are cut loose by one of Asterius' henchmen. When the logs come barreling towards them, the two try to escape via the rope bridge but soon find that it, too, has been cut. They then decide that their only way out is to run in place on the logs, jumping from one to the next and balancing themselves until the last log falls into the ravine. Miraculously, the plan works.

Once back at widow Twanky's shack, another dance lesson begins. Oena is furious when one of Asterius' henchmen reports that Hercules and Althea have survived the attack and are still planning to dance in the Panathenaia. Finally, Twanky feels that Hercules and Althea are ready to learn the Twanky Twiddle, her precious secret weapon which involves some fabulous moves forbidden in the competition. As the two struggle to perfect the difficult routine, Twanky reveals that the mother Althea never knew was a wonderful dancer. When Althea confronts her father about this startling revelation, he confirms that Althea's mother wanted to win the Panathenaia more than anything, but because she refused to follow the rules, they were disqualified by the judges. He adds that the reason he never wanted Althea to dance in the competition was that her mother died of a broken heart and he was trying to protect her from the same fate. At this, Althea runs off.

When Althea reaches Twanky's shack, she finds the widow tied and gagged. She is grabbed by Asterius' henchmen and just as they are about to break one of her legs, Hercules arrives and overpowers the thugs. Hercules and Althea then race to the Panathenaia. Just as Asterius is about to announce Oena and her partner the winners of the competition, Hercules and Althea sweep onto the dance floor and begin the dance of their lives. Asterius orders his guards to force them off the floor, but Hercules is able to drive them back with high kicks and blows during the elaborate dance routine. When Althea successfully completes the final complicated leaps and twists, the crowd goes crazy with applause. Hercules urges the crowd to always follow their hearts and with that, everyone spills onto the floor to dance.
