Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

War Wounds

On their way to meet Nebula (Gina Torres) at her boat, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) and Iolaus (Michael Hurst) encounter a badly injured man. Hercules tells Iolaus to go on ahead to Corinth with Nebula and he will catch up with them later. Upon arriving in Corinth, Iolaus explains to Nebula that the soldiers he and Hercules once fought with are gathered to dedicate a statue to those who did not return from war. Ajax (Peter MacCauley), a good friend of Hercules and Iolaus, soon arrives with Phidias (Bruce Allpress), the statue's designer. When the monument is revealed in the town square, Kazon (Warren Carl), the King's sergeant, informs the veterans that they do not have a permit for the statue and orders them to leave. When Phidias challenges him, Kazon has him arrested and hauled away to Golgoth, the most hellish prison in Greece. A fight then erupts between the war veterans and the King's guards causing the statue to crash to the ground. Iolaus urges Ajax to call off his men and shortly thereafter, Hercules' brother, King Iphicles (Kevin Smith) arrives. Iolaus receives a less than cordial welcome from the King as he is told to stay out of this matter. But Iolaus promises Ajax that he will speak to Iphicles.

Later that day, Iolaus goes to see Iphicles at his palace and consoles the King on the recent loss of his wife. Iolaus then learns that Iphicles holds Ajax and his men accountable for him not being able to be with his wife when she died because he was out controlling a riot involving returning soldiers who couldn't leave the fighting behind. Iolaus tries to convince him that these veterans need help readjusting back into society and that throwing them into prison isn't the solution. Iphicles doesn't agree, but at least consents to meeting with Ajax. Later, Iolaus attempts to arbitrate between them, but Iphicles orders Ajax and his men to leave Corinth or face the hell of Golgoth. Ajax then pulls a knife on the King telling Iolaus that there is no alternative but to kill him. Suddenly more of Ajax's men drop from the windows and tie up Kazon and his guards. As Ajax leads Iphicles onto the prison island, Iolaus rushes to Nebula and asks her to help him rescue the King. Meanwhile, Ajax's men fight off the prison guards as they free the veterans. As Nebula and Iolaus sail to the prison, she tells him about the natural tunnels that exist there and the man-eating sand worms that reside in them. Just as the two make shore, Ajax finds Phidias and his thrown into a giant fit of rage when he sees how his friend has been beaten into a bloody pulp. But it's Phidias' death that ultimately pushes Ajax over the edge. Iphicles tries to escape the warrior's wrath, but falls off a rope bridge into the sand, breaking his leg. Just as the sand worms begin their attack, Iolaus jumps in to save the King when Hercules suddenly appears, quick to join the battle. Once the three have safely made it out of the sand, Hercules tries to reason with Ajax, but to no avail -- Ajax wants Iphicles dead. But Hercules is able to convince the warrior to let him speak with his brother. After a quick converasation with Iphicles, Ajax tells Hercules that he will let his brother live if he returns to Corinth, empties the treasury a brings it to Golgoth. Hercules agrees to do this but demands that Iolaus stay with his brother. But when Hercules and Nebula leave, Ajax tells his officer Boraxis (Antonio Te Maioha) that in order to avenge the death of Phidias, Iphicles must die.

However, Hercules has figured out Ajax's plan and never leaves for Corinth. Instead, he and Nebula enter the prison through the back tunnels as Ajax sentences Iphicles to die. Just as Ajax pulls a knife on the King, Iolaus convinces him to give Iphicles a fighting chance to get off the island. Ajax agrees and tells the wounded King that he can earn his freedom by fighting his way out of the worm infested sand. When Iolaus tries to protect Iphicles from this fate, Ajax has both men thrown into the certain death trap. As the two valiantly battle the horrific predators, Hercules and Nebula emerge from the tunnels. Hercules attempts to save his friend and brother as Ajax tears into him. But this warrior is no match for Hercules, as Hercules leaves his friend bloodied and bruised. Hercules then pushes a gigantic watch tower into the sand, allowing Iolaus and Iphicles to escape. Ajax now realizes that he has taken things too far and jumps into the sand only to be devoured by the worms. A distraught Iphicles swears that this madness will end and the next day officiates the dedication of Phidias' statue, extending land to the veterans as a gift from Corinth.
