In exchange for some artwork, a visiting Sultan (John Givins) offers to let Salmoneus (Robert Trebor) take as many jewels as he can carry from a treasure trove. Salmoneus eagerly accepts the offer, not realizing that the evil Sultan has booby-trapped his riches. While searching through the treasures, Salmoneus finds a remarkably valuable solid gold lamp. Unfortunately, Autolycus (Bruce Campbell), the King of Thieves, is already dangling above, attempting to steal the lamp. As Autolycus and Salmoneus argue over the lamp, they manage to avoid a nearby trap. In their struggle, the two men release the vain and gorgeous genie, Jinni (Hilary McMillan), from the lamp. As the Sultan's men attack, Autolycus escapes using his grappling hook, with Salmoneus literally in tow.
Reaching safety, Jinni tells the duo that they must share the three wishes. To aid in his chosen profession, Autolycus wishes to be invisible, but instead becomes intangible, making it impossible for the King of Thieves to grab anything. Salmoneus cannot decide whether to enhance his sensitive side or his more physical, ruthless self. Jinni solves this dilemma for him. The next morning, Salmoneus finds himself that he now has two clones - the sensitive "Cry Baby" Sal (Robert Trebor) and the energetic "Hyper" Sal (Robert Trebor). Autolycus decides to tests his new power at the Sultan's house. As he stands unseen by the Sultan, he learns that the Sultan's men have been sent to capture Salmoneus. Autolycus uses his power to pass through walls to run ahead and warn Salmoneus. Autolycus arrives slightly ahead of the guards and warns Salmoneus and his clones. As they grab the lamp and start to exit through the window, the Sultan's men arrive and burst into the room. As the three Salmoneuses escape, the lamp is dropped and left behind. Eventually, Autolycus and the three Salmoneuses are able to retreive the lamp and avoid being killed by the Sultan.
Taking advantage of a calm moment, Salmoneus and Autolycus decide to forfeit their last wish. Unfortunately, by not using their last wish, they violate the contract with Jinni. They find themselves restored to their original selves and transported into Jinni's lamp with several other people Jinni has collected. One inmate explains that Jinni spends most of her time talking to them, but she unfortunately only talks about herself. Meanwhile, the lamp is found by the Sultan's guards and it is returned to his vault.
Autolycus leads a revolt, and the inhabitants manage to rock the lamp so that it falls over and they are able to escape. The Sultan, in his fury at seeing Autolycus and Salmoneous again, trips and falls into his own booby-trap, killing himself. Finally safe, Autolycus has pity on the lonely genie and uses his final wish to give her a roomful of clones to keep herself company.
