Hercules: The Legendary Journeys

Render Unto Caesar

As Julius Caesar's (Karl Urban) forces prepare to attack the island of Eire, Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) tries to protect a weakened half-god/half-human Morrigan (Tamara Gorski) from the Celts. They seek revenge for the cruel slaughter of their people she performed. No longer allowed to drink the intoxicating blood sacrifice she enjoyed while serving the cruel Celtic god Kernunnos (Stuart Devenie), Morrigan suffers from withdrawal. She rejects the role of guardian of Justice that Mabon (Nicko Vella), the god of wisdom, and the other Druids have chosen for her. Believing there is good in everyone, Hercules tries to help her through this crisis of faith.

While Hercules organizes the feuding Celtic tribes of Eire to fight Caesar, Morrigan calls on Kernunnos for help. He tells her to aid Caesar, for when the Celts are enslaved, they will again turn to their old gods. Though Morrigan is affected by the sight of Celts massacred at the hands of the Romans, she still goes to Caesar and tells him of Hercules' plans. Hercules has anticipated this betrayal, however, and when the Romans attack, he defeats the emperor's battalion.

As Morrigan's sympathy for the Celts grows and her mortal heart gains dominance over the half of her that is a god, Hercules is surprised to see her continued loyalty to Kernunnos. Soon, Kernunnos reveals their bond -- their young daughter, Brigid (Benedicta Joseph), whom the god is holding hostage. Hercules agrees to help Morrigan get her child back. In the midst of a fierce battle between the Celts and the Roman soldiers, Hercules and Morrigan face Kernunnos in a desperate fight upon the cliffs. Morrigan finally embraces her new identity as the embodiment of Justice when she stops Hercules from killing Kernunnos in cold blood. She later is forced to kill the god when he attacks her from behind. With Caesar's armies in retreat, Morrigan thanks Hercules for believing in her.
