On a fishing outing, Iolaus 2 (Michael Hurst) reminisces about Nautica (Angela Dotchin), the mermaid with whom he fell in love. When brigands attack the port, Iolaus and Hercules (Kevin Sorbo) spring into action. The fight ends when Lysaka (Patrick Wilson), the thugs' captain, berates his men for confusing celebrating with rioting. Lysaka announces that he is in town to be married and Iolaus is shocked to learn that the bride is a two-legged Nautica. Before Iolaus can intercede, Hercules calls upon Aphrodite (Alexandra Tydings) to find out what is in Nautica's heart. The Goddess of Love reveals that Nautica asked her for legs so that she could marry Lysaka, but she refused to explain her actions. Suspicious about the situation, Hercules sets off to find Nautica's father, Triton (Bruce Hopkins). He leaves Aphrodite to help Iolaus stall the wedding.
Aphrodite disguises Iolaus so he can get aboard Lysaka's ship. He finds Nautica and they declare their love, but Nautica refuses to go with him. Meanwhile, on the road to Triton's shrine, Hercules is surprised to meet up with his former wife, Serena (Sam Sorbo). The memory of their passionate relationship and the tragic conclusion overcome Hercules. He reminds himself that she has no memory of their relationship, due to his actions during a trip back in time. Serena explains that her husband has been lost at sea and she is going to pray to Triton for his return. Since that is his destination, he offers that they travel together, an offer that she accepts.
Iolaus makes another attempt to contact Nautica at the wedding feast, but this time Iolaus is discovered and he is thrown in the brig, since hanging him might upset Nautica before the honeymoon. At the same time, a strange bond is growing between Hercules and Serena. Arriving at the shrine, Hercules finds Triton in a weakened state. Lysaka has stolen his trident, the source of his power, and Nautica has agreed to marry Lysaka to get it back. Unfortunately, she does not realize that the trident loses its power in a mortal's hands, so Triton and the seas are already doomed. Hercules goes to the Cabiri (Donogh Rees), the creator of the trident, to ask for another. The Cabiri is a temperamental, elemental force that predates the gods, but Hercules appeals to her in the name of love - Iolaus' for Nautica and his for Serena - and the Cabiri relents. Triton is saved.
Hercules says a painful goodbye to Serena, but he is glad to know that he has made her happy by getting the Cabiri to promise her husband's return. Meanwhile, Iolaus escapes and tells Nautica that her sacrifice in marrying Lysaka will be in vain. When she refuses Lysaka, he orders them both to be hanged. As the nooses are being tightened around their necks, Hercules arrives and rescues them. Realizing that they are destined to be together, Aphrodite offers to make Iolaus a merman so he can be with Nautica. Hercules is left behind, having had to say goodbye, for a second time, to two people he loves.
