Smallville

Reckoning

Clark has something important to share with Lana - finally, he will reveal the secret that, up until this point, has been ripping their relationship to shreds. He takes her to the Fortress of Solitude and tells her everything. He proves his Kryptonian powers to her by taking carbon rock and turning into a diamond, and then he fuses it to a setting on a ring with his laser vision. He proceeds to propose to her but doesn't demand an immediate answer.

Lana still loves Clark, but the weight of what she know know is very apparent in her face. She turns to Lois; she vaguely explains her situation to Lois without giving too much away. However, Lois know it's about Clark, and she tells Lana that, no matter what the issue is, Clark is a great guy. Lois even adds that she herself would be lucky to have a guy like Clark. Lana accepts Clark's marriage proposal, and they start spreading the news at Jonathan Kent's campaign headquarters at the Talon, where the election night returns will show he is the winner.

Lex, reeling from his defeat, calls Lana, and Lana slips out of the Kents' victory party to talk with him. He's drunk and makes a move on Lana. She's not too happy about this development, so she leaves the mansion. Clark calls her cell phone while she's speeding away, but Lex follows her. With all the distractions, Lana crashes into a bus. She dies at the scene. Clark is devastated.

Chloe, who is usually Clark's pillar of strength regarding all things emotional, is incredulous when Clark predicts everything that is about to happen when he visits her at the Daily Planet offices. Why? Because he's lived this day before. When Lana died, Clark asked Jor-El for one chance to go back and save Lana's life. Jor-El did give him that chance, but only one. This means this time around Lana won't know his secret - and perhaps won't stay in the relationship either. After all, how can she stay with someone who's clearly hiding something? Nonetheless, the plan calls for Chloe staying with Lana the rest of the day. This way, Clark will know where she is at all times. He won't let fate claim her life this time around.

Jonathan wins the senate race, but immediately he receives a call from his financial backer, Lionel Luthor. He meets Lionel at the Kents' farm. Lionel talks about being partners, but Jonathan will have none of it. He lets Lionel know that he intends to pay Lionel back every penny. Lionel then warns him that he knows something - something very damaging - about the Kents; he proceeds to show him a photo or important piece of paper that only both of them can see. Jonathan and Lionel then engage in a very physical fist fight. Jonathan the asserts that the Kents will always be better than the Luthors and leaves the barn, only to fall to the ground. Jonathan has a heart attack and dies.

Clark believes he caused Jonathan's death, but Martha knows best. She believes even given the choice, there is no way he could choose between Lana and Jonathan. Clark worries about how he will weather the world without his father, but Martha knows Jonathan has already set Clark on the right path. Whether Clark chooses to continue to follow that path is now up to him.
