Concerned for her safety, Clark accompanies Lois on her escapade to the remains of the Reeves Dam laboratory, where Lois hopes to learn more about what happened to Chloe and her. The two find a spacecraft with Kryptonian symbols all over it. Even though Clark tries to persuade her that she hasn’t found a spacecraft, Lois is convinced she has and even snaps a photo of it with her cellphone. All of a sudden the same Kryptonian woman that saved Lex takes Lois out and smashes her cellphone. Clark tries to confront her, but she knocks him aside before flying off.
After Chloe informs Clark about the whereabouts of a woman fitting the Kryptonian’s description, Clark finds her at a playground looking for a young child. Clark discovers that he is the child she has been looking for. The young woman reveals herself to be Kara, the daughter of Jor’El’s brother Zor’El. Kara promised her father that she would look after Kal’El and help him fulfill his destiny, prompting her to leave Krypton for Earth when the spacecraft carrying baby Kal’El did. Her spacecraft was trapped below the surface and she was stuck in suspended animation in it until the destruction of the Reeves Dam laboratory broke her craft and her free. Meanwhile, the Daily Planet’s new editor, a young tycoon named Grant Gabriel, overhears Lois and Chloe talking about the spacecraft. Grant is impressed with Lois’ passion for the story and hires her to write an article about it. After giving it some thought, Lois tells Grant that Chloe would be a better fit to write the article, but Grant has followed Chloe’s work since highschool and feels she has lost her passion for stories not based in reality. Grant wants to open the Daily Planet up to a wider audience by including more sensationalist stories and feels Lois has the first winner. After some convincing Lois agrees to write the story. She uses information she obtained from an airforce contact to locate the spacecraft, which has been removed from the crash site by the U.S. government.
Clark and Kara pay Chloe a visit at the Daily Planet, seeking her help in finding Kara’s spacecraft. Though Chloe has no clue where to start, an apparent unrelated story she is working on actually holds the answer Clark and Kara are looking for. At the abandoned grain silo where the U.S. government have stashed the spacecraft at, a member of the U.S. Department of Security watches on as several top scientists attempt to open the craft up. Since the craft can only be safely opened up by Kara, a nuclear explosion is triggered. After Clark helps Kara learn how to use her super hearing, the two manage to locate the silo. While Clark shields an unconscious Lois, Kara is able to stop the ship from going nuclear. Later that day, Lois presents her article to Grant. He likes it but can’t publish it without photographic proof. Despite that he hires Lois as a full-time writer for the Daily Planet.
Meanwhile, a LuthorCorp employee admits to having killed Lana to get revenge on Lex. While all the charges are dropped, Lex isn’t convinced that his employee did anything because he thinks Lana is still alive. Lex visits Chloe at the Daily Planet and demands to know what she knows of Lana’s whereabouts and the top secret research Lana stole from him. Chloe insists that she knows nothing. After his security team locate Lana, Lex departs for Shanghai, where he confronts Lana at her apartment. Lex gives Lana credit for outsmarting him by stealing and using a clone of her that he made to take her place in the explosion. Lana wants to kill Lex but she can’t bring herself to do it, even after he tells her she should do it for the good of the world. Before Lex leaves he promises Lana that if she wants to return to Smallville no harm will come to her. After Lex returns from Shanghai, he asks his security team to use all their resources to find the young woman that saved his life.
In the end, Kara may have stopped her spacecraft from blowing up but was unable to retrieve a special Kryptonian crystal from it. This crystal contains important information about Krypton, the House of El, and the destiny that Clark and her share. Unbeknownst to her, the U.S. Department of Security agent that presided over the spacecraft opening has procured it. Thinking Lana is dead, Clark leaves Smallville to begin his training at the Fortress of Solitude. Jor’El reveals that he was unaware of Kara’s presence. He informs Clark that the first step of his training is for him to look after Kara and to discover why she is truly on Earth. Though Clark is quick to trust Kara, Jor’El isn’t. Zor’El was his evil brother and Kara and her motives may not be any different.
