Chloe informs Clark that Kara has been spotted in Washington, DC. He then finds out from Jimmy Olsen that Kara was interested in the footage of the spaceship that Lois got at the Granville grain silo and the government connection to it. Hoping to find out more about what the government was up to at the silo, Clark goes to Lionel for help. Lionel reveals that a branch of the U.S. Domestic Security called Starhawk has been in Smallville since the second meteor shower studying what they believe may be connected to extraterrestrials. They were ready to leave until a recent occurrence kept them put. Clark is certain it involves Kara and the crystal she has been searching for. Meanwhile, Lex finds Starhawk’s secret laboratory in Washington, DC. After Agent Carter refuses to disclose any information on their research with him, Lex promises Carter that he will find out on his own.
Kara seduces Kevin, one of the Starhawk lab technicians, into telling her the location of the laboratory where the crystal is at. After getting into the laboratory, Kara looks for the crystal but can’t find it. She goes to the Daily Planet building and uses Jimmy’s computer to hack into the Department of Domestic Security’s files and finds out that LuthorCorp broke into the same laboratory on the same day she did, leading her to think that they must have her crystal. Meanwhile, Chloe visits the office of a foundation that she read was recently opened up to help meteor-infected people like herself. Chloe is shocked when Lana greets her at the front desk, and even more shocked to find out that Lana is the proprietor of the foundation. When Lana asks Chloe why she is at the foundation’s office, Chloe tells Lana she found out about it online and wanted to conduct an interview with the proprietor. Chloe’s suspicions about Lana’s good intentions to help the meteor-infected are triggered when Lana asks Chloe not to tell Clark about her venture.
Assuming that Lex has her crystal at his mansion, Kara breaks in and looks for it. Before she can locate it Agent Carter appears and restrains her with kryptonite. Lex tries to stop Carter from leaving with Kara, but Carter shoots Lex with a tranquilizer gun. Spying on Lex through a surveillance system in her office, Lana informs Clark about what has happened to Kara.
In Washington, Carter straps Kara up to a machine that Sommerholt Institute had created to make people relive repressed memories. Though it was unstable Starhawk has perfected it and it will flow a kryptonite serum straight into Kara’s veins, forcing her to answer every question Carter asks her. After Carter asks Kara where she is from, Kara remembers following Clark’s biological mother Lara to the Kent farm in 1986. Lara wanted to see for herself the place where Jor’El felt their son would be safe if Krypton fell. Kara suggests that Lara name her son Kal’El and takes a photo of her so that Kal’El will know what his mother looks like if he’s sent to Earth. After she hides the photo of Lara in a frame under a photo of Martha Kent, Kara’s father Zor’El bursts down the door to the Kent house and confronts Lara. In the present, Clark finds the Starhawk laboratory and knocks Carter down. As he tries to free Kara, Clark falls victim to the serum and sees Kara’s memories of the confrontation between Lara and Zor’El. During the confrontation, the obsessed Zor’El tries to force Lara into staying with him on Earth, hoping she will help him rule it. When Lara refuses Zor’El promises her that they will be together someday through his experiments, revealing that he has stored some of her DNA in a crystal. After Kara confronts her father about his malice, Zor'El wipes her memory of what happened that day. Back in the present, Lionel finds the laboratory and shoots Carter, saving both Clark and Kara.
In the end, knowing how evil her father was, Kara no longer thinks of him as a hero. Clark and her vow to work together to find her crystal, which they now know contains Lara’s DNA. Lionel informs Lex that he knows about his son’s obsession with Kara and suggests that he stop obsessing over Clark and his family and friends. Though Lex insists he’s changed, Lionel doesn’t believe it is for the better and reminds him that he can’t hide who he really is from him. Kara and Jimmy make plans to have lunch together, upsetting Chloe who still has serious feelings for her former boyfriend. Clark reveals to Lana that he has procured Kara’s crystal and is hiding it in the barn on the Kent farm.
