Grant surprises Lois when he informs her that Lex wants her to write the Daily Planet’s expose on him. Moments later, Lois receives a call on a cellphone in her desk from a man named Adrian Cross. Adrian claims to be a clone that escaped from one of LuthorCorp’s Level 33.1 labs. The experiments that were conducted on him failed and he will only be alive for a few more days. If Lois refuses to write a piece on what Lex’s experiments did to him, Adrian will detonate a bomb he has placed on Chloe. Though Lois tries to evade Adrian’s threats by getting several messages to Chloe, they are all intercepted in some way. Lois now realizes that Adrian is watching her from inside the Daily Planet and that she has no choice but to do what he asks of her. Meanwhile, Clark returns from the Fortress of Solitude and tells Lana that he wants them to work together to bring down Lex. Having decided that she is finished with trying to get even with Lex, Lana is surprised by Clark’s offer to work with her but accepts.
Lana takes Clark to the Isis Foundation so they can look over all of the information that she has acquired on Lex’s Project Scion project. She shows Clark a photograph of the test tube that contained a sentient being of alien origin. Though Lana suspects it was destroyed during their scuffle at the lab, Clark is certain it wasn’t. Lana then shows Clark the barely conscious body of Casey Brock, a lab technician from the Project Scion laboratory that was found a few days earlier in an ally exhibiting random, incoherent speech patterns and suffering from toxic levels of metal poisoning. While at the Isis Foundation the metal content in Casey’s body dropped dramatically in the course of only one night. Clark suspects that Casey was possessed by the sentient being from the test tube, which fed on her natural minerals and then moved on. Casey starts mumbling something in Kryptonian which Clark scribbles down.
At the Daily Planet, Chloe is in the elevator with Jimmy when she finds a note about the bomb that Lois thought she managed to get by Adrian’s watchful eyes. All of a sudden the elevator shuts down between floors and Chloe and Jimmy are stranded with a bomb that could be detonated any second. Chloe finds the bomb in a Christmas gift that was placed in her purse. Jimmy lashes out at Chloe when she uses her cellphone to make a call for help to Clark instead of the police. Chloe protects Clark’s secret by telling Jimmy that it would be too dangerous to call the police if whoever planted the bomb in her purse was aware enough to shut down the elevator after she found the note warning her about it.
After Lois presents Adrian with the story she wrote about him, he tells her that all the memories in his head were a fictional memory that one of Lex’s scientists implanted in his brain. Adrian doesn’t just want a story written now, he wants Lex to admit his atrocities to Lois during the interview she is supposed to conduct with him for the Daily Planet expose. Moments later, Lois enters Grant’s office and begins to question Lex about Project Gemini, the project that Adrian is forcing her to ask him about. Lex denies all knowledge of the project. Communicating with Lois through an earpiece Adrian tells her to let Lex know that he is responsible for her asking these questions. After Lex still denies knowledge of the project, Adrian demands that Lois pull a gun he placed in her briefcase out and do whatever is necessary to get the answers out of Lex. She points the gun at Grant and threatens to pull the trigger if Lex doesn’t come clean. Lois tells Lex about Adrian’s false memories, all of which sounds familiar to Grant. With Lois to his back for a moment, Lex takes a paperholder and knocks Lois over the head with it, sending her to the floor unconscious. While Lex locates the earpiece that Lois had on her, Grant asks Lex why Adrian has his memories. Moments later, Adrian enters Grant’s office and the truth about Grant is revealed. He isn’t Lex’s brother. Both Grant and Adrian were clones that were implanted with false memories. Adrian was a failed experiment while Grant wasn’t. Lex created Adrian hoping to having a brother, desperate for the love of another. When he failed with Adrian, Lex tried again and created a successful clone in Grant. As Adrian chastises Lex for playing god, Lex shoots him dead. As he slumps to the ground Adrian sets off the detonator, leaving Chloe and Jimmy with just moments to live.
Realizing they may not get out of this one alive, Chloe tells Jimmy that she couldn’t be in a relationship with him because she is a meteor freak. She follows that up by giving him a passionate kiss. After coming to the Planet to ask Chloe to translate the Kryptonian words that Casey mumbled to them, instead Clark and Lana find an abandoned e-mail from Lois to Chloe about the bomb. Clark uses his powers to locate Chloe and Jimmy and remain unseen while getting the bomb out of the elevator before it goes off. Later on, Chloe demonstrates her meteor power to Jimmy by healing a cut on one of his fingers. Jimmy agrees to keep the knowledge of her power a secret, strengthening their friendship.
In the end, Lex informs Lois that he has bought the Daily Planet and is now her boss. Lex tries to convince Grant that although they aren’t really brothers he truly cares for him as one and that is why he didn’t kill him after he shot Adrian. Grant knows better and realizes that Lex’s so-called love is nothing more than a desperate attempt to be loved because he is incapable of truly loving someone. Fearing that his relationship with Lois could be harmful to her, Grant breaks up with her. After Chloe translates the Kryptonian words that Casey mumbled to Clark and Lana, Clark suspects the sentient being that had possessed Casey is actually Brainiac, the believed to be dead entity that had taken the guise of his college professor Milton Fine. Though Clark and Lana share a tender moment after Chloe leaves, unbeknownst to Lana, Clark’s face turns chalky and cracked in the process. He isn’t Clark but Bizarro, the final Phantom Zone prisoner that was believed to have been destroyed. The real Clark is trapped in the Fortress of Solitude with no seeable way out.
