After appearing in Detroit without her memory and powers, Kara is hired on as a waitress at a diner under the name Linda. Once Lex finds out about her amnesia he goes to Detroit hoping to convince her to return with him. Lois follows Lex but works on her own to find Kara after she discovers Lex has placed a tracker on her. In a junkyard, Kara’s obsessive co-worker Jacob Finley shoots Lex in the head, intent on keeping Kara from leaving. Though Lex is found and sent back to Smallville for treatment, Finley locks Lois and Kara in a fence cage while he makes plans for Kara and him to leave Detroit together.
As soon as Clark and Chloe find out about Lex they pay Lionel a visit at the Smallville Medical Center. Lionel tells them that there is little chance Lex has at ever regaining consciousness. He also gives Clark a cellphone with a photo of Lex and Kara together that was found on Lex and notes that they went missing several hours ago. Though Chloe offers to use her meteor power to save Lex so he can tell them where Kara and Lois are, Clark doesn’t want her to risk dying for good if she can’t revive herself after using her powers this time. As an alternate plan, the two learn from Lana that LuthorCorp invented a machine as part of Project Intercept that was used on terrorists to literally enter their minds and retrieve information they wouldn’t freely share. While their isn’t any certain guarantee that he will make it out alive, Clark volunteers to enter Lex’s mind to try and locate Lois and Kara.
Lionel takes Lex, Clark, and Lana to the LuthorCorp facility where the machine that will allow Clark to enter Lex’s mind is. Before Clark goes in, Lionel and the doctor who spearheaded Project Intercept warn Clark that if he goes in too deep they will be unable to pull him out and he will have to get out on his own by leaving through a software encoded red door. Almost immediately after entering Lex’s mind, Clark appears in the memory Lex has of finding Kara in Detroit. He pretends to be a customer at the diner she works at and convinces her that he knows a way to help her regain her memory. After discovering that Clark is in his mind, Lex attacks him, ceasing Clark’s view of his memory. Clark is saved by Alexander, the human manitifation of Lex’s younger, innocent self. He calls Clark his friend and shows him a place where he can hide from Lex. This hiding spot takes Clark into a memory from Lex’s childhood where Lionel accused his son of taking a peak in his briefcase, which contained files relating to a top secret project called Veritas. To avoid being struck, Lex tells his father the truth - that it was his mother, Lillian, who opened his briefcase and looked at the files. Lionel lashes out at his wife, who in turn berates Lex for the abuse he caused to be inflicted on her.
The next set of memories that Clark sees are Lois finding Lex at the diner in Detroit and snapping a photo of him smooth talking Kara, and an enraged Finley shooting Lex in the head in the junkyard. Having gotten too far into Lex’s mind, Clark must now leave on his own. In an effort to try and save both Clark and Lex, Chloe tells Lionel that she can save Lex. As Chloe works a miracle with her meteor power, Clark stops Lex from killing Alexander. As he prepares to leave through the software encoded red door, Clark asks Alexander to keep fighting his dark urges and promises to always look out for him. When Clark exits Lex’s mind he tells Lionel to take Chloe to her apartment so she can revive herself. He goes to Detroit and stops Finley from shooting Lois and Kara. Back in Smallville, Lionel tells Lex that a vial of serum he saved from Oliver Queen’s failed RO65 experiment brought him back from certain death. He also tells Lex that despite everything he’s done he loves him. Lex responds to his father’s show of affection in a cold manner by walking away and saying nothing.
In the end, Clark shares his concern with Chloe over her use of her meteor power and the fact that she was out longer this time than the first time she used it. Clark pays Lex a visit at his mansion. Though Lex has no memory of Clark entering his mind, Clark is certain that Lex still knows that there is a side of him that is repentant of the things he’s done. Clark tells Lex that it’s always possible for things that are lost to be found again. Feeling out of place, Kara relies on Lex and asks him to help her regain her memory like he promised. One step closer to learning the truth about Kara and likely Clark, Lex is more than happy to oblique.
