Smallville

Quest

Lex allows Milash, an antique dealer, to examine the cryptograph he procured from the Veritas group’s lockbox in Zurich. Moments later, the same man that tried to kill Lex in Zurich attacks him a second time. Instead of killing him, the attacker carves a Kryptonian symbol on his chest. After Lex comes to his senses at the hospital, he notices the symbol carved on his chest and realizes someone else wants to get their hands on the cryptograph. Later that evening, Jimmy shows Chloe several photographs of Lex he managed to take while hanging out around the hospital. Chloe notices the Kryptonian symbol and brings one of the photos to Clark. Since the symbol means “savior and “traveler”, Clark suspects it has something to do with the Veritas group, who saw themselves as the saviors and protectors of the Traveler. Aware of the fact that the lockbox in Zurich was opened, Chloe suspects that Lex might have gotten his hands on whatever was in it, though has not yet learned how it can control Clark and/or that he is the Traveler. Before Clark can confront him about it, Lex checks out of the hospital.

The same man that attacked Lex tries to steal the cryptograph from Milash's shop in Metropolis. Though he manages to take out Lex’s security, Lex shoots him down and saves Milash so he can continue examining the cryptograph. Meanwhile, disturbed by the fact that someone is trying to protect him by attacking people, Clark continues to look over the photo and discovers another symbol. This third symbol means “sanctuary”, which he believes means church. Chloe remembers that St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers, which leads her to discover from her research that there’s only one church named after St. Christopher on the continent and it’s in Montreal.

Milash informs Lex that the same man that crafted the cryptograph also crafted a special clock. This clock had gears that were identical to the ones on the crytograph. While this clock had gone missing after World War II, it resurfaced a few years back in St. Christopher’s cathedral in Montreal as a donation from Virgil Swann. Lex decides to head to Montreal, hoping to finally find out everything about this Traveler that his father was obsessed with all his life - an obsession that he feels his father abandoned him in favor of.

Clark is first to arrive at the cathedral. After he deciphers several Kryptonian symbols on a fountain, Clark is greeted by Edward Teague. Though Edward was thought to have been killed by Lionel Luthor, he reveals that he went into seclusion as a monk after his wife and son died so he could fulfil his promise to serve the Traveler. He also explains that he carved the symbol on Lex’s chest as a message to the Traveler, hoping he would come to Montreal. While Edward is grateful to have finally met the Traveler, he is infuriated that Clark refuses to kill Lex, especially since Lex now has the means to control him. Rather than allow him to fall into Lex’s hands, Edward subdues Clark with kryptonite and places him on a ceremonial altar for a Kryptonian ritual that will kill him. As he is about to perform the ceremony, Edward tells Clark that Jor’El sent the cryptograph to Earth as a means for its people to protect themselves if the Traveler didn’t protect them. Though he regrets that it had to come to this, Edward feels he has no other choice than to kill the Traveler, and commences the ritual by carving a Kryptonian symbol on Clark’s chest and flooding the altar with Kryptonite that will slowly drain him of life. Meanwhile, Chloe finds out from Jimmy that Lex is headed to Montreal. Unable to get a hold of Clark by phone, Chloe decides to travel to Montreal on one of Oliver Queen's private jets so she can find Clark and warn him.

During the ritual, Lex enters the church, but in a different area. He finds the clock and places the cryptograph over a particular part, fitting it together like a puzzle. The clock starts playing an old Irish folk song that Lex remembers his father making him play on the piano during his childhood. As the song plays, the gears turn and a small disk with Kryptonian symbols rotates to the front of it. After he takes the disk, Edward confronts him. A fight ensues. Elsewhere, Clark is saved from certain death by Chloe. Moments later, Clark uses his powers to remain unseen as he stops Lex and Edward from killing each other and smashes the clock that has the cryptograph attached to it. Unfortunately for him he doesn’t know about the disk that Lex took from it.

In the end, Chloe tells Clark that in order to protect himself he might have no other choice than to kill Lex. On the way back from Montreal, Lex remembers that his father had the Luthor mansion moved from the same island in Scotland where the song the clock played originated from. Once he is back in Smallville, Lex notices that the symbol on the disk he found in Montreal matches a symbol carved on the fireplace in his office. He finds a metallic orb hidden behind it. After he activates this orb with the disk, it displays a holographic map of the planet with the coordinates to the Fortress of Solitude.
