Ares bests Hercules in a fight by the lake where Iolaus, Jason, and the demigod are fishing at. When Ares manages to kill the demigod, the two are instantly transported to Mount Olympus for a trial. Ares has broken Zeus' rule that state other gods can't harm his son. Ares insists he's innocent. He even appoints Hercules as his attorney since he thinks his half-brother's good judgment won't bring any harm to him. If Ares is found guilty, he will be sent to a hellish place for fallen gods. Meanwhile, thinking Hercules is dead, Iolaus decides to leave the academy since he feels his partnership with the demigod was his reason for staying.
Athena, Apollo, and Hephaestus are appointed by the gods to preside over Ares’ trial. When Ares' loyal stooges Strife and Discord don't come to his defense, Hercules suspects they had something to do with the attack. It turns out he is correct. Ares' name is cleared. Instead of having his stooges face the traditional punishment, Ares asks for that right. Although grateful for what Hercules did for him, Ares makes note that their war is far from over. Hercules returns to Cheiron's academy. Having decided that his partnership with Hercules would have been in vain if he had left, Iolaus also makes his return around the same time.
