Iolaus, Lilith, and Marco have to take a shortcut through the Dune Sea to get back to Cheiron's academy since they want to avoid being late. They run into trouble in the form of a sandshark. This monstrous creature that dwells under the ground leaps in and out of the sand in pursuit of the cadets. They barely make it over to a rock-pile island where they will be safe until they can decide how to escape. While they wait, Marco tells them about his decorative fighting staff. He reveals that it was given to him when he was younger as a sign that he would leave his village to do great things. Meanwhile, Cheiron sends Hercules and Theseus out to look for the missing cadets. They eventually arrive at the Dune Sea. They manage to climb on top another rock-pile island to avoid being eaten by the sandshark. They spot their friends in the distance.
Marco tries to make a run for the other rock-pile island. In the process he is eaten by the sandshark. Later, in an effort to find a method of escape, Hercules tosses a rock out into the Dune Sea. The sandshark grabs it. Hercules decides to throw several more. Each time the sandshark fetches the rock. The cadets use this method to meet up, but the sandshark still pursues after them as they cross smaller rocks to reach the border of the Dune Sea. Hercules is able to impale it with a gigantic bone he grabs from the carcass of a dead animal. Iolaus, Lilith, and Theseus return to the academy. Hercules decides to go to Marco's village to bring his people the news of his death.
