2006 NBA Draft

June 28, 2006
Madison Square Garden, New York

First Round

  1. Toronto: Andrea Bargnani (Italy) 6-10/240
Toronto took who they had their eye on all along, although there were rumors they could still trade down and get him. On July 1, 2006 Toronto signed Bargnani to a two year $9,340,080 contract with two more years worth $11,703,931 at the team's option. Toronto picked up that option. Andrea started off his rookie season coming off the bench, but was soon a vital part of the team's rotation.
  2. Portland: (from Chicago from New York): LaMarcus Aldridge 6-10/245 (Texas-sophomore)
Chicago traded the rights to LaMarcus Aldridge and a 2007 second round draft pick to Portland for the rights to Tyrus Thomas and Viktor Khryapa. Portland really wanted Aldridge, and didn't want to take the chance that he would be gone at four, although it looks like he might have still been available. On July 4, 2006 Portland signed Aldridge to a two year, $9,340,080 contract with two more years worth $11,703,931 at the team's option. Aldridge had shown signs of brilliance during his rookie season, just a taste of what is to come.
  3. Charlotte: Adam Morrison 6-8/220 (Gonzaga-junior)
Morrison will have an immediate impact in the NBA. The Charlotte execs were playing it cool and not letting on they had their eye on him, instead talking about Rudy Gay and Brandon Roy. On July 6, 2006 Charlotte signed Morrison to a two year, $7,504,560 contract with two more years worth $10,004,027 at the team's option. Adam was a starter off and on for Charlotte during his rookie campaign.
  4. Chicago (from Portland): Tyrus Thomas 6-9/218 (LSU-freshman)
Chicago traded the rights to LaMarcus Aldridge and a 2007 second round draft pick to Portland for the rights to Tyrus Thomas and Viktor Khryapa. Thomas seemed to be Chicago's man all along, and they traded down to get him and picked up another player! On August 1, 2006, Chicago signed him to the rookie max salary.
  5. Atlanta: Shelden Williams 6-9/250 (Duke-senior)
Rumor had them taking the other Williams, Marcus, because they needed PG help, but they will turn to the free agent market for that. On July 10, 2006 Atlanta signed Williams to a two year, $6,127,080 contract with two more years worth $7,698,188 at the team's option. They exercised their option.
  6. Portland (from Minnesota): Brandon Roy 6-5/195 (Washington-senior)
Minnesota traded the rights to Brandon Roy to Portland for the rights to Randy Foye and cash. Portland comes up with two top prospects in Roy and Aldridge. Roy has the potential to be the top player in the draft, and he certainly has top three potential. On July 4, 2006 Portland signed Roy to a two year, $5,565,000 contract with two more years worth $6,995,056 at the team's option. Roy was viewed as one of the most NBA-ready players in the draft, and I guess people were right as he was named Rookie of the Year.
  7. Minnesota (from Portland from Boston): Randy Foye 6-3/205 (Villanova-senior)
Portland traded Sebstian Telfair, Theo Ratliff, and a 2008 seconnd round draft pick to Boston for Dan Dickau, Raef LaFrentz, and the rights to Randy Foye, then Portland traded the rights to Randy Foye and cash to Minnesota for the rights to Brandon Roy. Boston decided to go for a more established PG in Telfair, and Portland swings a deal to get Minnesota a floor leader for their future. On July 5, 2006 Minnesota signed Foye to a two year, $4,880,080 contract with two more years worth $6,391,321 at the team's option.
  8. Memphis (from Houston): Rudy Gay 6-8/220 (Connecticut-sophomore)
We thought they were looking for a combo guard, but a top tier talent falls to them. Gay could turn out to be one of the better long term players in the draft. On July 12, 2006 Memphis traded Shane Battier to Houston for Stromile Swift and the rights to Gay. On July 12, 2006 Memphis signed Gay to a two year, $4,653,450 contract with two more years worth $5,860,397 at the team's option.
  9. Golden State: Patrick O'Bryant 7-0/205 (Bradley-sophomore)
Almost every mock draft in the world had him going here. On July 7, 2006 Golden State signed Patrick O'Bryant to a two year, $4,278,120 contract with two more years worth $5,391,563 at the team's option.
  10. Seattle: Saer Sene (Belgium) 7-0/235
Seattle really reached to get this guy. He's a project and they already have a couple of those. On July 10, 2006 Seattle signed Sene to a two year, $4,064,160 contract with two more years worth $5,124,210 at the team's option.
  11. Orlando: JJ Redick 6-4/190 (Duke-senior)
I like this pick. Redick's value seems to have slipped lately, but I think he will still contribute big time right away, and Orlando is a good situation for him. On July 7, 2006 Orlando signed Redick to a two year, $3,860,880 contract with two more years worth $4,979,128 at the team's option.
  12. New Orleans: Hilton Armstrong 6-11/235 (Connecticut-senior)

  14. Utah: Ronnie Brewer 6-6/217 (Arkansas-junior)
On July 11, 2006 Utah signed Brewer to a two year, $3,310,440 contract with two more years worth $4,551,841 at the team's option.

  20. New York (from Denver via New Jersey via Toronto): Renaldo Balkman 6-8/215 (South Carolina-junior)
I don't even need to say that this one is the worst pick in the first round. Maybe the worst first rounder since Frederick Weis. On July 5, 2006 New York signed Balkman to a two year, $2,387,880 contract with two more years worth $3,482,337 at the team's option.
  21. Boston (from Phoenix from LA Lakers via Boston via Atlanta): Rajon Rondo 6-2/170 (Kentucky-sophomore)
Phoenix traded the rights to Rajon Rondo, Brian Grant, and cash to Boston for Cleveland's first round draft pick (top 10 protected) in 2007. On July 4, 2006 Boston signed Rondo to a two year, $2,372,880 contract with two more years worth $3,410,002 at the team's option.
  22. New Jersey: (from LA Clippers via Orlando via Denver): Marcus Williams 6-2/200 (Connecticut-junior)
Marcus is the annual slippery slider award winner after a few teams in the lottery passed on a PG, or traded their pics (ie Atlanta, Houston and Boston). On July 12, 2006 New Jersey signed Marcus to a two year, $2,278,080 contract with two more years worth $3,339,365 at the team's option.
  23. New Jersey: Josh Boone 6-10/237 (Connecticut-junior)
Another steal for the Nets who have really improved their bench. Boone could have been flirting with the lottery, but instead goes to a playoff team. On July 12, 2006 New Jersey signed Josh to a 2 year, $2,187,000 contract with two more years worth $3,269,088 at the team's option.

  26. LA Lakers (from Miami): Jordan Farmar 6-2/170 (UCLA-sophomore)
The predraft camp and workouts had his stock skyrocketing, but he ended going right about where he was predicted before all that hype began! On July 5, 2006 The LA Lakers signed Farmar to a two year, $1,948,680 contract with two more years worth $3,027,240 at the team's option.

  30. Portland (from Detroit Via from Utah): Joel Freeland (England) 6-11/225
Freeland was relatively unknown a few weeks before the draft, and actually was mistakenly left off the first Early Entry list, before the NBA corrected it. He should not only be a good prospect, he could provide some help right away.

    Second Round

  31. Portland: James White 6-7/190 (Cincinnati-senior)
Unlike in past years, there really weren't any clear cut first round choices that slipped to the second round, allowing most teams to go with their original plans.
