LarryB's 2007 NBA Mock Draft

Final Edition -- Updated June 28, 2007

First Round

  1. Portland: Greg Oden 7-0/250 (Ohio State-freshman)
Portland hopes to return to the glory days of Bill and Clyde. No brainer...put it on the board!
  2. Seattle Kevin Durant 6-10/220 (Texas-freshman)
The only discussion is whether Durant or Oden will win ROY. Maybe they should just share it.
  3. Atlanta: Al Horford 6-9/245 (Florida-junior)
Atlanta doesn't necessarily need anothere PF, but they would really be reaching for a PG at three. They will probably go for best available.
Other possible picks: Brandan Wright, Yi Jianlian, Mike Conley.
  4. Memphis: Joakim Noah 6-11/230 (Florida-junior)
Memphis who doesn't really need to reach to fill needs, but just get a good player. They seem to be impressed with the Florida trio, as most of the top picking teams in the draft are. Don't expect them to reach for Conley, but they could have Jianlian on their back burner.
Other possible picks: Yi Jianlian, Al Horford, Mike Conley.
  5. Boston: Yi Jianlian 7-0/230 (China)
Jianlian might be positioning himself to make a last minute dash up the draft board. Right now 5 is a little high, but I can see that changing. Other possible picks: Joakim Noah, Jeff Green, Corey Brewer.
  6. Milwaukee: Mike Conley 6-1/180 (Ohio State-freshman)
I'm not sure if Milwaukee really knows what direction to go in right now, so that she leave them looking at the best possible player to join their rotation right now. Brandan Wright really seems to be slipping right now. And the Florida trio seems assured to be picked up in the top 7. Its been fairly clear that they will need to add a PG this year, and this could just be there answer.
Other possible picks: Yi Jianlian, Corey Brewer, Brandan Wright.
  7. Minnesota: Corey Brewer 6-8/185 (Florida-junior)
Look for Minnesota to take whatever Florida big man is left.
Other possible picks: Joakim Noah, Yi Jianlian, Julian Wright.
  8. Charlotte: Brandan Wright 6-10/210 (UNC-freshman)
Wright could still end up in the top three, and might prove in years to come that he was worth it. Charlotte will take one of the Florida big men or consider taking a chance on Jianlian, if still available. If they are gone, then I think they will be seriously choosing between Jeff Green, Julian Wright and a sliding Brandan Wright.
Other possible picks: Jeff Green, Julian Wright, Yi Jianlian.
  9. Chicago (via New York): Spencer Hawes 7-0/250 (Washington-freshman)
There has been talk of them looking for a PG, but I just don't buy it. They need a big man with potential who can be slowly groomed into a more prominent role. Hawes seems to fit their needs perfectly and has been in for multiple workouts.
Other possible picks: Mike Conley, Joakim Noah, Yi Jianlian.
  10. Sacramento: Jeff Green 6-8/235 (Georgetown-junior)
He would be a great fit in Sacramento. Sometimes the Kings do the unexpected, and we don't really know what direction they will go. Green is very hot right now, and might not last this long.
Other possible picks: Mike Conley, Julian Wright, Al Thornton.
  11. Atlanta (via Indiana): Acie Law 6-3/185 (Texas A&M)
Atlanta doesn't want to use the third pick on Conley, but would love to take him right here. I don't see a whole lot of teams up higher in the lottery actually pulling the trigger on a PG early this year, except for Milwaukee, but some of them could pull off a trade with Atlanta so that they could guarantee getting their PG which they really need.
Other possible picks: Javaris Crittenton, Mike Conley, Jeff Green.
  12. Philadelphia: Al Thornton 6-8/220 (Florida State)
This is where he's expected to go in many mock drafts. I still don't quite see him as a lottery pick, but why not....I guess....
Other possible picks: Acie Law, Javaris Crittenton, Jeff Green.
  13. New Orleans: Nick Young 6-6/200 (USC-junior)
On paper Young seems to be the best fit in New Orleans, and will help plug some holes. You don't figure they will want to go big or get a PG with a lottery pick. They need the best available guy who could eventually become a starter. He's a great shooter, and could sneak up a little bit higher before all is said and done.
Other possible picks: Al Thornton, Thaddeus Young, Spencer Hawes.
  14. LA Clippers: Javaris Crittenton 6-5/195 (Georgia Tech.-freshman)
Rumor has it that they have given a guarantee to take Acie Law if he is still on the board. Otherwise Crittenton would make sense if they are really looking for a PG. Don't be surprised if they surprise everyone and take Splitter or Belinelli.
Other possible picks: Tiago Splitter, Acie Law,Marco Belinelli.
  15. Detroit (via Orlando): Rodney Stuckey 6-4/205 (Eastern Washington-soph.)
Stuckey is moving up draft boards. Not only that but he has been linked to the Pistons for a few weeks. Again, Detroit doesn't really need to address any huge holes with this pick, so selecting someone that they like makes a lot of sense.
Other possible picks: Julian Wright, Acie Law, Tiago Splitter.
  16. Washington: Julian Wright 6-8/225 (Kansas-soph.)
Spencer Hawes would ideally slip this far, but if that doesn't happen they will still look to go big. A PG? Nope. Julian Wright could be in a freefall, but if The Wiz aren't married to the idea of taking a big man, then he could just land here.
Other possible picks: Josh McRoberts, Jason Smith, Spencer Hawes.
  17. New Jersey: Jason Smith 7-0/240 (Colorado State-junior)
If any team can just sit back and see who falls to them it is the Nets. I don't think they will have the heart set on any player, and will quickly pull the trigger on anyone that is slipping down the draft board. That said. If none of the guys up above slip, Josh McRoberts is probably the best player left on the board.
Other possible picks: Josh McRoberts, Al Thornton, Acie Law.
  18. Golden State: Thaddeus Young 6-8/217 (Georgia Tech-freshman)
He looks an awful lot like the players that they already have, but that hasn't seemed to hold them back. They don't really seem inclined to be looking at traditional PGs or Cs, so Young seems to make sense.
Other possible picks: Acie Law, Josh McRoberts, Rudy Fernandez.
  19. LA Lakers: Rudy Fernandez 6-6/170 (Spain)
The Lakers are also predictably unpredictable, so Fernandez is as good a bet as any.
Other possible picks: Rodney Stuckey, Acie Law, Javaris Crittenton.
  20. Miami: Derrick Byars 6-7/225 (Vanderbilt)
Law falling in their lap would really be another best case scenario. They wouldn't mind taking another PG, but won't reach for one if the top 3 aren't available. They have also said that they are not interested in taking an International Player because of contract buyouts and availability issue. Apparently they want to add that last piece right now. Thaddeus Young makes a lot of sense, but will most likely be gone. That leaves Byars who is an all around good player who could help out right away and bring some young legs to the team.
Other possible picks: Thaddeus Young, Petteri Koponen, Javaris Crittenton.
  21. Philadelphia (via Denver): Sean Williams 6-10/235 (Boston College-junior)
They are intrigued by Sean Williams and have the ability to take a risk on him here, so don't be surprised if they add another big man with their second pick.
Other possible picks: Josh McRoberts, Jason Smith, Tiago Splitter.
  22. Charlotte (via Boston via Toronto): Josh McRoberts 6-10/240 (Duke-soph.)
They will probably be mulling over the remaining big men to see who they think can get the most playing time. They could also be considering Marco Belinelli.
Other possible picks: Marco Belinelli, Tiago Splitter, Aaron Gray.
  23. New York (via Chicago): Wilson Chandler 6-7/230 (DePaul-soph)
Their star is lobbying to add another shooter...really? Supposedly Isiah has promised to pick Wilson Chandler. They followed through on their promise to Renaldo Balkman last year, though.
Other possible picks: Marcus Williams, Aaron Gray, Marco Belinelli.
  24. Phoenix (via Boston via Cleveland): Marco Belinelli 6-6/200 (Italy)
This would be another dream situation for both the player and the team. They really need to just take the best available.
Other possible picks: Marcus Williams, Peter Koponen, Marc Gasol.
  25. Utah: Morris Almond 6-6/214 (Rice)
He's a good solid player who would appear to fit in well with their team. He might be the best shooter in the draft, and that could help give them a spark off the bench to take them to the next level. Coincidentally, this is also where he would fall to them.
other possible picks: Sean Williams, Derrick Byars, Marcus Williams.
  26. Houston: Tiago Splitter 6-11/240 (Brazil)
Sean Williams has also been recently rumored to be going there. Houston often pulls off a surprise, so we really don't want to get stuck on anyone in particular.
Other possible picks: Sean Williams, Marc Gasol, Jared Dudley.
  27. Detroit: Aaron Gray 7-1/280 (Pittsburgh)
If they don't go big with their first pick, they will want to add some depth with this one.
Other possible picks: Daequan Cook, Marc Gasol, Nick Fazekas.
  28. San Antonio: Petteri Koponen 6-4/195 (Finland)
San Antonio is looking for another backup PG, and they are not afraid to go International to get him.
Other possible picks: Marc Gasol, Jared Dudley, Sean Williams
  29. Phoenix: Marc Gasol 7-0/270 (Spain)
If they keep this pick they might also look to pick up backup PG like Gabe Pruitt or Petteri Koponen.
Other possible picks: Gabe Pruitt, Petteri Koponen, Jared Dudley.
  30. Philadelphia (via Denver via Golden State via Dallas): Gabe Pruitt 6-4/170 (USC-junior)
If Philly went big early, they will want to add some depth in the guard spot. Pruitt is creeping into the first round, and could go anywhere in these last 3 or 4 picks.
Other possible picks: Jared Dudley, Daequan Cook, Petteri Koponen.

    Second Round

  31. Seattle (via Memphis): Jared Dudley 6-7/225 (Boston College)
  32. Boston: Marcus Williams 6-7/207 (Arizona-soph.)
  33. San Antonio (via Milwaukee): Stanko Barac 7-1/220 (Bosnia)
  34. Dallas (via Atlanta): Nick Fazekas 6-11/225 (Nevada)
  35. Seattle: Glen Davis 6-8/280 (LSU-junior)
  36. Golden State (via Minnesota): Reyshawn Terry 6-7/232 (UNC)

  40. LA Lakers (via Charlotte): Ramon Sessions 6-3/190 (Nevada-junior)

  44. Orlando: Demetrius Nichols 6-7/205 (Syracuse)
  45. LA Clippers: Kyle Visser 6-11/240 (Wake Forest)
  46. Golden State (via New Jersey): Kyrylo Fesenko 7-0/240 (Ukraine)
  47. Washington: Herbert Hill 6-10/240 (Providence)
  48. LA Lakers: Sun Yue 6-9/205 (China)
  49. Chicago (via Denver via Boston via Phoenix via Golden State): Carl Landry 6-8/235 (Purdue)
  50. Dallas (via LA Lakers via Miami): DJ Strawberry 6-5/201 (Maryland)
  51. Chicago (via Denver): Jared Jordan 6-2/180 (Marist)
  52. Portland (via Toronto): Trey Johnson 6-5/218 (Jackson State)
