Antoine Walker

Antoine Walker

Antoine Walker was a good choice for the Celts with the sixth pick in the draft. This underclassmen from Kentucky is a player with great potential who can play either forward position. He led the Wildcats in rebounding (8.4) and was second on the team in scoring (15.2) his sophomore, and last, season. He was honored by being named to the All-SEC First Team and the MVP of the SEC Tournament. Antoine played in all the games his rookie year, starting most of them. He also played every position for the Celts. Now they just have to find 4 other guys to play with him. At 6-8 noone is quite sure what position he will end up at. He signed a 3 year deal worth 4,660,000 dollars. Antoine signed a contract extension for six years worth 71 million dollars. In college, it wasn't his stats as much as his potential that made him a standout player. He has already provided key scoring punches for the Celtics. In his rookie year, he scored a then career high 37 points against Philly on 3/28/97 and recorded a career high 21 rebounds on 3/21/97 against Orlando. He has since eclipsed that point record with 49 on 1/7/98 against Washington. Antoine was named to the All-Rookie First team, and in his second year he is proving he was the best pick in this draft class. Comparison to Larry Bird's early accomplishments is warranted because Antoine scored the second most points as a rookie in Celtics history (1,435) to Bird's most points (1,745). Antoine was one of two 1996 draftees to play in the all-star game in 1998. He was chosen as a reserve after ranking in the top 3 of all power forwards in almost all statistical categories. Kobe Bryant started that year. Antoine was named a starter for the 2002 all-star game. On October 20, 2003, Dallas traded Raef LaFrentz, Jiri Welsch, Chris Mills, a 2004 draft pick (lottery protected) to Boston for Antoine Walker and Tony Delk. He only played for the Mavs for one year, because on August 4, 2004, Dallas traded Antoine Walker and Tony Delk to Atlanta for Jason Terry, Alan Henderson, and a 1st round draft pick. On February 24, 2005 Atlanta traded Antoine Walker to Boston for Gary Payton, Tom Gugliotta, Michael Stewart, and a 1st round draft pick in 2005 or 2006. On August 2, 2005 the largest trade in NBA history occurred with 5 teams and 13 players involved. In a sign-and-trade, Boston first re-signed Antoine Walker to a 6 year, $53 million contract. Boston traded away Antoine Walker and received Curtis Borchardt, Qyntel Woods, the draft rights to Albert Miralles, a 2nd round draft pick in 2006, a 2nd round draft pick in 2007 or 2008, and cash from Miami. Miami traded away Eddie Jones, Qyntel Woods, Rasual Butler, the rights to Albert Miralles, a 2nd round draft pick in 2006, a 2nd round draft pick in 2007 or 2008, and cash and received Antoine Walker, Jason Williams, James Posey, Andre Emmett, and the draft rights to Roberto Duenas. Memphis traded away Jason Williams, James Posey, Andre Emmett, and Greg Ostertag and received Eddie Jones and Raul Lopez. New Orleans traded away the draft rights to Roberto Duenas and received Rasual Butler and Kirk Snyder. Utah traded away Curtis Borchardt, Raul Lopez, and Kirk Snyder and received Greg Ostertag.
