After being drafted at 10 out of Temple by the Lakers, Eddie
Jones broke into the starting lineup leading to his selection to the NBA
All-Rookie First Team. He scored 25 points in the Rookie Game to lead all
scorers on his way to being named the game's MVP. As a senior at Temple
he was the Atlantic Ten Conference Player of the Year and an Honorable
mention All-American (AP). He was also the first Temple player ever
to have more than 100 steals and 100 blocks. Fans in LA are comparing him
with another E.J. by the name of Magic. He had the finest rookie season
since Magic, averaging 14.0 points per game to Magic's rookie season 18.0
ppg. As a rookie he led the league in steal to turnover ratio (1.75 to
1.00). He finished third in his second season. He also led all rookies
in steals per game (2.05).1997 saw Eddie being chosen for his
first All-Star Game. Later, he was player of the month for November
1997. In 1998 he was also a reserve, joining Shaq, Van Exel and Kobe as
one of four LA Laker All-Stars. He was the fourth player
(Grant Hill, Jason Kidd
and Juwan Howard) to play in the AS game from
his draft class. Eddie started the all-star game as a Hornet for the
eastern conference team in 2000. In 1996-97, the 6-6 swingman saw some
additional time at the small forward slot with injuries to other Laker
teammates, most notably Cedric Ceballos, Robert Horry and Shaq. Eddie is
a defensive maniac, getting recognition in 1997-98, being named to the
All-Defensive Second Team, and again in 1999 and 2000. On
March 10, 1999, Eddie was traded to the Charlotte Hornets along with Elden
Campbell for Glen Rice, J.R. Reid and
B.J. Armstrong (who was immediately released). Eddie was named to his
first All-NBA Team in 2000, the Third Team. He left Charlotte during the
free agent season in 2000 working a sign and trade with Miami. Charlotte
re-signed Eddie Jones to a 7 year, $93 million contract and traded Jones,
Anthony Mason, Ricky Davis, and Dale Ellis to Miami for P.J. Brown, Jamal
Mashburn, Otis Thorpe, Tim James, and Rodney Buford. On August 2, 2005 the largest trade in NBA history occurred with 5 teams and 13
players involved. In a sign-and-trade, Boston first re-signed Antoine
Walker to a 6 year, $53 million contract. Boston traded away Antoine Walker and received Curtis Borchardt, Qyntel Woods, the draft rights to Albert Miralles, a 2nd round draft pick in 2006, a 2nd round draft pick in 2007 or 2008, and cash from Miami. Miami traded away Eddie Jones, Qyntel Woods, Rasual Butler, the rights to Albert Miralles, a 2nd round draft pick in 2006, a 2nd round draft
pick in 2007 or 2008, and cash and received Antoine Walker, Jason
Williams, James Posey, Andre Emmett, and the draft rights to Roberto Duenas.
Memphis traded away Jason Williams, James Posey, Andre Emmett, and Greg Ostertag and received Eddie Jones and Raul Lopez. New Orleans traded away the draft rights to Roberto Duenas and received Rasual Butler and Kirk Snyder. Utah traded away Curtis Borchardt, Raul Lopez, and Kirk Snyder and received Greg Ostertag. On August 6, 2007 Dallas signed Miami free agent Eddie Jones to a two year, $4 million contract.
