Juwan Howard

Juwan Howard

After being named a Second Team All-American (NABC), Third Team All-American (AP) and All-Big Ten in 1994 following his junior year at Michigan where he averaged 20.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game, Juwan Howard declared for the draft and was promptly picked at #5 by Washington. At Michigan he was part of the fab five with teammates Jalen Rose and Chris Webber that made two appearance in the NCAA Championship game (losing to both Duke and UNC). Howard joined draft class alums Jason Kidd and Grant Hill as an all-star in 1996. This 6-9, 240 pound forward put up an impressive sophomore campaign as an encore to his All-Rookie Second Team showing in 1995. He was third among rookies in scoring and led all rookies in rebounding (sounds like first team material to me).

He was one of three impressive front line players for the Bullets, including college teammate from Michigan Chris Webber and Gheorge Muresan. Then, in the 1998 off-season, Webber was traded away for Mitch Richmond. Juwan was a highly sought after free agent at the end of the 1995-96 season after being named to the All-NBA Third Team in 1996, and NBA player of the month for April of that year. He scored a career high 42 points (4/19/96) at Toronto in that same month. Juwan signed a lucrative 7 year 105 million dollar contract with the Bullets in 1996. The league invalidated his contract with the Miami Heat after deciding it violated the salary cap. The Bullets got him back, but had to lose a first round draft pick (no one gets it, it was just eliminated). 1997 saw Juwan make his first, of what is hopefully many more, playoff appearances, losing to Jordan's Chicago Bulls juggernaut in the first round. Juwan is quite the humanitarian, as the NBA's Spokesman for the Reading is Fundamental Program and developing the Juwan Howard Foundation for underprivileged youth in DC and Chicago. On February 22, 2001, just before the trading deadline, Dallas traded Christian Laettner, Hubert Davis, Loy Vaught, Courtney Alexander, Etan Thomas, and $3 million to Washington for Juwan Howard, Obinna Ekezie, and Calvin Booth. On February 21, 2002, in a last minute deal just beating the trade deadline, Dallas sent Juwan Howard Tim Hardaway and Donnell Harvey plus cash and a first round draft pick in the 2002 draft to Denver for Raef LaFrentz, Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson and Tariq Abdul-Wahad. On July 16, 2003, Orlando signed Juwan to a 5 year, $29,502,000 contract. On June 29, 2004, Houston traded Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato to Orlando for Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue, and Reece Gaines. On June 14, 2007 Houston traded Howard to Minnesota for Mike James and Justin Reed.
