Allen Iverson

Allen Iverson

(Iverson Picture)The Philadelphia 76ers had an easy choice to pick Allen Iverson out of Georgetown with the number one pick. He looked good in his debut, giving us a hint of this future all-star. His cross over is deadly, if he's not called for carrying...carrying the team that is. This 6-0 (165 lb) guard may someday own the PG spot in the NBA. He got off to a fast and hot start, leaving other rookies in the dust, being named the November Rookie of the month after leading all rookies in points, assists and steals.

In college he was a first team All-American, and the two time Big East Defensive Player of the Year. As a Freshman at Georgetown, he led his team in scoring (second year, too) on his way to the Big East Rookie of the Year and UPI's Rookie of the Year for the NCAA. Allen was named MVP of the Schick Rookie Game after scoring 19 points and dishing out 9 assists in an eastern rookie squad winning effort. As this first season wound down, Allen started to put up bigger numbers, trying to put an exclamation mark on his season proving he deserved being named ROY. He broke Wilt Chamberlain's rookie record by scoring more than 40 points in five consecutive games, Wilt did it in only three. Iverson's second to last 40 point effort was actually for 50 points on April 12th against Cleveland. The only other NBA player to score 50 in 1996-97 was Michael Jordan. This rook's keeping pretty good company. After the spectacular scoring outputs, Iverson was named the rookie of the month for April. Allen signed a 3 year, $9.38 million contract on September 12, 1996. On January 26, 1999, Philly signed him to a six year contract extension worth 70.9 million dollars. He got off to an amazing start in the shortened 1999 season, leading the league in scoring after one month and being named player of the month for February. He was named to his first All-NBA First Team in 1999. Allen started the All-Star Game in 2000 for the first time in his career. He was again a starter from 2001-2006. He was an All-NBA Second Team selection in 2000, but back on the First Team in 2001. After an outstanding 2000-2001 NBA season, Iverson was named the league MVP for the first time. He was the shortest player ever to win the award. He had some injury troubles in 2002 and slipped back to the All-NBA Second Team. He was also named to the Second Team in 2003. He didn't make any All-NBA Team in 2004, for the first and only time since he was a rookie, buit he was back to the All-NBA First Team in 2005 after leading the league in scoring. Iverson was bumped to the All-NBA Third team for 2006. He was named to the 2004 USA Basketball Team that will compete in Athens in the Summer Olympics. On September 24, 2003, Philadelphia signed Allen to a 4 year, $76.7 million contract extension. Iverson is now signed through 08-09. On December 19, 2006 Philadelphia traded Allen Iverson and Ivan McFarlin to Denver for Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and two 2007 first round draft picks.
