Larry Johnson won rookie of the
year honors over 3 other potential superstars. He has developed into an
all-star forward. LJ, who was the go-to guy in Charlotte, currently is
under a 12 year 84 million dollar contract. New York is now paying his
big paycheck. With the Knicks, he joins a talented team including Patrick
Ewing, Charles Oakley and Allan Houston. He was able to play his more
comfortable position, small forward, due to the talented Oakley and
Buck Williams coming off the bench. In 1999, after Oakley was traded,
it looks like he'll move back to the PF slot, teaming with either Marcus
Camby or Latrell Sprewell in the frontcourt. LJ started for the eastern
all-stars in 1993 after proving he was in the 20 point 10 rebound per game
club with Malone and Barkley. He had been to the AS Weekend before,
finishing second in the 1992 Slam Dunk Competition. In 1993 he was also a
member of the All-NBA Second Team. He went back to the AS Game again in
1995. LJ led the Hornets to their first playoff stint of 1993,
but wasn't able to get back again, until he joined the Knicks. He
collected the Hornets first triple double and is their all-time leading
rebounder (3,479) and second on their scoring list (7,405). He can
consistently rebound, score and pass, but looks a little hesitant in the
Big Apple. Larry is a popular player who ranks near Jordan in
merchandizing, remember the "Granny" commercials? He was a member of the
much maligned Dream Team II.
In college he was a unanimous All-American
first team selection in 1991 and a consensus first team selection in 1990.
His selection as College Player of the Year (NABC, USBW) at UNLV
translated into being the Number One pick of the college draft. He was
traded to the New York Knicks for Anthony Mason and Brad Lohaus on July
15, 1996. Due to a bad back, Larry Johnson retired from the NBA prior to
the 2001-2002 season.
