Jason Kidd was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the
second pick in the draft, ahead of Grant Hill. This 6-4, 210 pound guard
out of California was a Unanimous First Team All-American after his
Sophomore Year, causing him to declare early. Jason led the nation in
assists in 1994 and in steals in 1993. He got off to a quick start in
the NBA, piling up 4 triple doubles, to lead the league, and being named
to the All-Rookie First Team and co-Rookie of the Year with Grant Hill. The Mavericks won 23 more games than the
previous year after Jason joined the team, due in large part to this
rookie's stellar performance. His second year was
just as impressive, as he was second in the league in assists and was
only the fourth player ever to have more steals than fouls in a season.
Kidd started the 1996 all-star game when he was the bright young star of
the Mavericks. He came as a reserve in 1998 as the Sun's number one
player in an impressive season under second year coach Danny
Ainge. He was once again elected to start with the most votes
amongst western conference guards with 1,061,031 in 2000. He started
again in 2001 and made his seventh all-star appearance in 2004 as a
reserve for the Eastern Conference. He has appeared three times for the east and four times for the west.
He
had the league in an uproar. Everyone was thinking he could be the next
great point guard superstar. My how things have changed in Texas. He had
some problems getting along with teammates in Dallas, so he was traded
with Loren Meyer, and Tony Dumas to Phoenix for Sam Cassell,
Michael Finley, A.C. Green, and a 2nd round pick in 1997 or 1998. We'll
have to see if he can start over in Arizona, and follow in KJ's big shoes.
He was named player of the week twice in 1998 (3/15/98 and 4/19/98)
proving he's gonna be around to stay. He finished fourth in the league
in assists in 1996-97, averaging 9 per game for the Mavs. In 1998 he
was second in the league in assists, though, for the Suns. He has the
distinction of being the third player in NBA history, along with Magic
Johnson and Oscar Robertson, to amass 700 assists and 500 rebounds.
He's done it twice, while Magic and Oscar have doene it six times
each. Jason was named to the All-Defensive First Team in 1999, his
first selection to that team, and the following three years as well,
making it four in a row, including 2002! In 2003 he was bumped to the All-Defensive Second Team, and was again on the Second Team in 2004 and 2005. After a rejuvenated 2005-2006 season, leading the Nets to the playoffs, he was back on the All-Defensive First Team. He was also named to his first
All-NBA First Team in 1999 and followed that up being selected in
2000-2002 as
well. He was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2003. He was back on the All-NBA First Team again in 2004. He was named to the All-Interview Second Team in 2002
(Probably because he was talking about why he didn't win MVP). Jason was
named to the Men's USA
2000 Olympic Baskteball Team. He's under contract until 2003 in a deal
that pays him 54 million dollars. Phoenix signed Jason Kidd to a 1 year,
$11 million contract extension. The extra year, which is for 2003-04, is
at Kidd's option. On July 18, 2001 New Jersey traded Stephon Marbury,
Johnny Newman, and Soumaila Samake to Phoenix for Jason Kidd and Chris
Dudley. Congrats to Kidd and his Nets team for making the 2002 NBA Finals
in his first year in New Jersey! After being one of the most coveted free agents of the 2003 offseason, New Jersey re-signed Jason Kidd to a 6 year, $103,572,000 million on July 24, 2003.
