KJ

(KJ's Picture)Kevin Johnson, Phoenix's all-star point guard, was drafted by the Cavaliers, but didn't come into his own until he was given charge of the Sun's offense. He left Cal as the school's all-time leader in points, assists and steals. He was traded from the Cavs to the Suns in his rookie year along with Tyrone Corbin, Mark West and a couple of second round picks for Larry Nance, Mike Sanders and a swap of First Round Picks. He ended up as rookie of the month for April, but didn't have the production over the season to make the All-Rookie team. After a non-spectacular rookie season KJ was named the 1989 Most Improved Player, proving he was one of the tops in this class. Kevin was also drafted by baseball's Oakland A's. On arguably the Sun's best team of all time (1992-93) KJ was the undisputed leader of the Suns, narrowly missing leading them to a title, losing to the Bulls in the Finals.

KJ is a 3 time All Star, playing in the game in 1990, 1991 and 1994. He is also a 4 time member of the All-NBA Second Team (1989-91 and 1994) and been named to the Third Team once, in 1992. He was also on DT II in 1994. Not only is KJ a super player, but he is also a super person, winning the 1990-91 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. Injuries have plagued KJ in later years, and he stayed true to his word, retiring after the 1996-1997 season. He changed his mind, though, and the day before the NBA Draft he announced he would be back for one more season, and his better than 8 million dollar contract. He went out with a bang, being named NBA player of the month for April 1997. KJ is number 14 on the all-time assists list and number one on the Suns all-time assists list with 6,442.
