Karl Malone was a sleeper in this
year's excellent draft class, but he has gone on to have as much success
as the best of them. He was picked by the Jazz with the thirteenth pick
out of Louisiana Tech. He finished third in ROY voting, and was named to
the All-Rookie First Team. His first year in the NBA was the only year he
didn't average at least 20 points or 10 rebounds per game! The Mailman is
disputably the best power forward in the game today, perhaps the best of
all time. He can run the floor, rebound, hit the medium range jumper,
defend both inside and out, and has an admirable array of inside moves to
beat you but good. In 1997 and again in 1999 he was named to the
All-Defensive First Team. He usually finishes in the top 5 in scoring as
well. He is a perennial all-star, starting
eight times, and always an All-NBA first or second teamer (11 All-NBA
first team selections from 1989-1998 once on the second team in 1988).
In 1999, the Mailman was named to his 11th All-NBA First Team, setting the
NBA record for most times being named to the All-NBA First Team. His 13
all-star game appearances ties him for second place all time. Only
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has played in more all star games (18). He was an
All-NBA Second Team selection in 2000, the first time
he wasn't on the first team since 1988. Unfortunately, he slipped to the
All-NBA Third Team in 2001, for the first time in his career. Kareem
Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Bob Cousy, Michael Jordan, Bob Pettit, and
Jerry West had been named to 10 All-NBA First Teams. Malone and teammate
John Stockton were named co-MVPs of the 1993
All Star Game. He
should have been voted to start in 1997, but finished third with 1,337,319
votes. He ended up starting anyhow for injured Charles Barkley. Karl
also has the distinction of being named to the 1996 and 1998-2001
All-Interview First Team and the 2002 and 2004 All-Interview Second Team.
He has pounded
out his career with the Jazz, and now hopes for his first NBA title.
Although he is the NBA's active playoff scoring average leader his team
has not gone the distance. He doesn't want to retire until he
has exhausted his last chance of winning an NBA title. Karl is the
All-Time Leader for the Jazz in minutes, points and rebounds. Karl
is currently second on the all-time scoring list, recently passing
Michael Jordan who has 29,277 points and Wilt Chamberlain (31,419). Only
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387) has more career points. On January
29, 2000, Karl scored his 30,000th career point vs. Minnesota. Malone was
also only the fifth player ever to amass 25,000 points and 10,000 rebounds
joining Wilt Chamberlain, Moses Malone, Elvin Hayes and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. He finally
won a much deserved honor, being named the MVP for the 1996-97 season.
He was named the league's MVP again in 1999. In
1998 he won the IBM award for having the best numbers based on a
statistical formula. Karl was on both Dream Team I and III, intimidating
other countries' front lines. He owns Karl Malone Toyota in Albuquerque,
NM and also enjoys driving a big-rig eighteen wheeler. In addition to
driving the
freightliner, he also rides a Harley and enjoys snowmobiling and other
outdoor sports. The Mailman is a true iron man, only missing 4 games in
his NBA career so far. Malone considers the pass that he took from
Stockton to break the all-time assists record one of his most memorable
NBA moments to date. Utah signed Karl to a 4 year contract worth 66.5
million dollars on August 1, 1999. On July 16, 2003 the LA Lakers signed Karl to a 2 year, $3.15 million contract. They used the $1 million exception (actual amount $1.5 million) to sign Malone.
