Danny Manning performed well in his rookie season after being
named college player of the year as a Jayhawk. He was a Unanimous First
Team All-American in 1987 and 1988; and a Consensus Second Team
All-American in 1986. Later, he was selected as a unanimous
selection for the Big East Conference's All-Time Greatest Player. Danny
was a member of the 1988 Bronze Medal Olympic squad and hopes for another
chance to play on a dream team and bring home a gold. He
did not put up the numbers of fellow rookie Mitch Richmond though, and an
injury slowed him down his rookie year, so he was not named to any
All-Rookie Teams. Unfortunately, Danny has had an up and down
career playing for poor teams, hopefully he can make his mark in Phoenix.
Unfortunately, the Suns seem to be in turmoil right now and he
hasn't asserted himself as the franchise player and scorer that he needs
to be. He had personality conflicts with his former Kansas coach, who
later became coach of the Clippers, Larry Brown, which contributed to his
trade to Atlanta. He was signed by the Suns as a free agent before the
1994 season. He is big for his position (6-10), but can dominate other
small forwards. He played in his first all-star game in 1993, and came
back in 1994. In 1998, Danny won the Sixth Man Award, coming off the
bench for Phoenix. On August 5, 1999 Orlando traded Penny Hardaway to
Phoenix for Danny Manning, Pat Garrity and 2 First Round Draft Picks.
Then, on August 19, 1999, Milwaukee traded Chris Gatling and Armon Gilliam
to Orlando for Danny Manning and Dale Ellis. On August 11, 2000 Utah
signed Danny Manning to a 2 year, $2.52 million contract with a
player option for the 2nd year. On July 31, 2001 Dallas signed Danny
Manning to a 2 year, $3.2 million contract. Following the 2002-2003 season, Danny Manning retired from the NBA.
