This 6-9 200 pound kid was drafted as
a high schooler out of Mt. Zion
Christian Academy. He was taken with the ninth pick in the 1997 draft by
the Toronto Raptors. Then Raptors GM Isiah Thomas was
drooling over this kid all along, but I didn't think he would be in a
position to take him. He was named both the High School USA Today Player
of the Year and the North Carolina state Player of the Year by The
Associated Press. As a HS senior he averaged 27.5 ppg., 8.7 rpg., 7.7
apg., 2.80 stlpg. and 2.00 blkpg. He led his team, Mt. Zion, to a
20-1 record that year. Toronto signed Tracy to a 3
year deal for the max
4.7 million. On August 3, 2000 in a sign-and-trade, Toronto re-signed
Tracy McGrady to a 7 year, $93 million contract with a player opt-out
clause after 04-05 and traded him to Orlando for a conditional 1st round
draft pick. After his move to Orlando, Tracy started to come into his
own, starting 77 games in his first season there, becoming the team's
clear leader. Tracy was named Most Improved Player for the 2000-01 season
in a landslide victory! He also was named to the All-NBA Second Team that year. In 2002, Tracy moved up to be named to the All-NBA First Team and followed that up with a selection to the First Team in 2003 as well! He was bumped back to the All-NBA Second Team in 2004, in a season which was ended short by injury. He slipped all the way to the All-NBA Third Team in 2005. He
was voted to start the all-star game in 2001, and was selected
as a reserve for his second straight appearance in 2002. He was an
all-star starter again in 2003 and 2004. When Tracy went west in 2004, he was voted to start for the Western Team in 2005 and once again voted a starter in 2006. Tracy led the NBA in scoring in 2002-03 with 32.1 ppg. He also led the league in scoring in 2003-04 with 28.0 per game. In case you didn't know, Tracy is
Vince Carter's cousin. On June 29, 2004, Houston traded Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley, and Kelvin Cato to
Orlando for Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue, and Reece Gaines. On November 1, 2004, Houston signed Tracy to a three year, $63 million contract
extension.
