Alonzo Mourning

Alonzo Mourning

Alonzo Mourning is another talented young player who everyone would be talking about as the best big man to come out of the draft since David Robinson, except for 'Zo's rookie classmate, Shaq. He plays much bigger and stronger than his 6-10, 269 lb frame. In 49 games he became the Hornet's all time leading shot blocker. Mourning can shoot from the perimeter and split the double team, but he is most dangerous when he gets inside and dumps in a little jump hook. One of his drawbacks is that he can get into foul trouble. Mourning joins Shaq as a repeat all-star (1994-1997, 2000, 2002) and a dominant new center in the NBA. Once again he was an eastern conference reserve at the AS game in 1997, but did not play due to injury. He was an all-star reserve in 2002 in his seventh appearance, coming back from missing most of the 2000-2001 season due to a kidney ailment. He finished second to Shaq in rookie of the year voting and probably will always be in that position in relation to Shaq. He was named rookie of the month twice, March and April of 1993, and made it on the NBA All-Rookie team. He was on Dream Team II, but wasn't invited to the party for III. He was named to the Olympic Team in 2000. At Georgetown, he was a 1992 consensus first team All-American, and in 1990 he was a consensus second team All-American. He was also named the Big East Conference Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Tournament MVP...the first player ever to receive all 3 honors in one year. Alonzo won the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for the 2001-2002 season. The award is presented by the Professional Basketball Writers Association to a player or coach for exemplary community service.
'Zo is the third dominant center to come out of Georgetown in the past ten years, along with Patrick Ewing and Dikembe Mutombo. All three are known for their overpowering defensive play, but each has a good offensive game as well, although Patrick and 'Zo are the better two. In 1989 he led the nation in blocked shots. At the beginning of the 1995 (11/3) season he was traded to the Heat along with Pete Myers and LeRon Ellis for Glen Rice, Khalid Reeves and Matt Geiger. He then signed a 7 year contract rumored to be between 105-112 million dollars. Pat Riley doesn't necessarily give 'Zo the ball on every play, but he makes the most of his touches. Alonzo is the NBA's spokesperson for the prevention of child abuse. 1999 was Alonzo's year dominating team's both offensively and defensively. He took his position atop the eastern conference's elite centers. He supplanted Mutombo on the 1999 All-Defensive First Team and won the 1999 Defensive Player of the Year Award. He held his spot, being named to the All-Defensive First Team in 2000 as well and holding onto the title of Defensive Player of the Year in 2000. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team in 1999 and to the All-NBA Second Team in 2000. He was named to his first All-Interview Team in 2001, the Second Team. Maybe due to his rehab he just had more to say! Alonzo was able to come back for the end of the 2000-01 season after his kidney ailment, and returned full speed the next year. Unfortunately he had to miss the 2002-2003 season. He became a free agent and New Jersey signed him to a 4 year, $22,618,200 contract, on July 16, 2003. During the 2004 season, he was traded to Toronto in the Vince Carter deal, but never played for them. He was finally released by the team and he signed with Miami.
