Dennis Rodman will be remembered for four things: rebounding, defense,
winning, and his hair. People can overlook his moody side, as the Bulls have
been able to do, when Dennis performs on the court. He is a perennial
choice for the All-NBA Defensive Team (6 times from 1989-1993 and again
in 1996) and a 2-Time Defensive Player of
the Year (1990 and 1991). He has played in the All-Star Game twice, in
1990 and again in 1992, and been named to the
All-NBA third team. He is still looked upon by many as a specialist, and
is not really a super-star, but he certainly can prove that he is
valuable, winning championships in Detroit and helping the Bulls trample
the east on the way to their fourth and fifth titles. He was drafted by
the Pistons late, having spent some time in the NAIA. He had an
incredible season in 1991-1992 averaging 18.7 rebounds per game for
Detroit. He came
to San Antonio in 1993, but they unloaded him on the Bulls for Will Purdue
in time for the 1995-96 season. In the summer of 1995, when Jordan was
filming the movie Space Jam, Rodman would visit Michael's
impromptu workout court on the set of Warner Brothers and play with the
superstar guard. Rumor, or urban folklore, has it that the two gelled
and Michael pushed for the acquisition of The Worm.
He
has won six consecutive rebounding titles through 1997 beating Moses
Malone's record of from 1981-1985. Once again Dennis won an NBA
championship, bringing his total to four. He won the first 2 in
Detroit and the last 2 in 1996-97 with an overpowering Bull's team
that won more regular season games, 72 (1995-96), than any other team.
1996 also saw Dennis publish a tell all autobiography entitled Bad as
I Wanna Be that was a surprising success. It leapt to the top of the
hardcover non-fiction best-sellers list. Many of
his escapades, including his tryst with Madonna, were detailed here. His
media rampage continued in 1996-97 where he landed a show on MTV called
Rodman's World Tour. He is also due to star in a movie with Jean
Claude VanDamme and will release his second book. In 1996 he signed
a 1 year deal with Chicago rumored to be worth 9 million dollars. He
signed a one year deal worth 4.5 million in 1997. Dennis' bad attitude
led to another hefty fine and suspension in 1997. This time he kicked a
cameraman on the sidelines. He settled out of court for $200,000 with the
kickee. He gave Hollywood a try, starring in the syndicated TV
show: Special Ops Forces. He has been in several movies including
1997's Double Team with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Simon Sez
(1999) and Cutaway (2000). Although, on February 23, 1999 he
signed a one year
deal with the Lakers for the veteran minimum (1 mil). He didn't have a
contract for the 1999-2000 season until signing with the Dallas
Mavericks for the rest of the year on February 3, 2000. The experiment
soon ended as he was released a little more than a month later after
alienating ownership, coaches and other players.
