Detlef
Schrempf, may be one of the most versatile players in the game, next to
Jordan, Pippen, Penny and Hill. He plays small forward, but at 6-10 he
overpowers most players at the position. Although drafted by Dallas at
#8 in 1985 out of The University of Washington, Schrempf made
a career for himself in Indiana, but now is hoping to win a championship
with a great Sonics team. While at Washington he was named to the
All-Pac 10 Team and to the All-American Second Team (TSN) as a senior
after averaging 15.8 points and 8 rebounds a game. After spending three
mediocre seasons in Dallas backing up Mark Aguirre, he came to the Pacers
in a trade involving Herb Williams (what Dallas front office executive
thought up that one). On 11/1/93 he was once again traded, this time
to the Sonics for Derrick McKey and Gerald Paddio.
Detlef is a native of Germany who is a two-time Olympian for the
German team. He has been an All-Star while with the Sonics (twice in 1995
and 1997), as well as in Indiana (1993). He also competed in the
Three-Point Shootout during the 1987 All-Star Weekend finishing as a
runner up to Larry Bird. In college, some NBA scouts compared the big
lanky German to Bird, but he never quite developed his game to that
level. Schrempf spent much of his career coming off the bench, especially
in Indiana, where he was a two-time NBA Sixth Man Award Winner (1991 and
1992). In 1995 he was named to the All-NBA Third Team, the first time in
his career that he was recognized with All-NBA honors. Detlef left
Seattle for Portland on August 3, 1999 when he signed a 2 year contract
worth 4.2 million dollars. Detlef decided to hang up his sneakers,
retiring following the 1999-2000 season. He came back for 26 games in
2000-01, not really doing much for the team.
