Vancouver was very happy with getting their
first choice in the draft. Shareef was the first Freshman to be picked in
the top 3...ever. He signed a 3 year contract worth 6,284,500. After
only one year of college ball, playing for California, he was named to the
Third Team All-American and he was picked as the Pac-10 Player of the
Year, the only freshman ever to win that honor. At 6-10 and 230 pounds
he's hard to handle at small forward. The Grizzlies started out slow
with him, but by mid season he seemed to touch the ball on every
play. The Grizzlies started going to him even more, and it showed, as he
was named co-rookie of the month for December, and again rookie of the
month for February. In February he averaged 24.5 points per
game. Shareef was a strong candidate for rookie of the year, finishing
third in the race, although he
didn't do much to improve his team's winning record. He's a nice guy,
though, and the fans up in Vancouver love him. 1997-98 saw Shareef
getting All-Star attention. He achieved his first triple double on
4/19/97 with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against the
Suns. Shareef was named to the Men's U.S. Olympic
Basketball team in 2000 to replace injured Grant Hill. Vancouver signed
Shareef to a six year contract extension on January 28, 1999 worth 70.8
million dollars. On July 19, 2001 Atlanta traded Lorenzen Wright, Brevin
Knight, and the rights to Pau Gasol (#3 draft pick) to Memphis for Shareef
Abdur-Rahim and the rights to Jamaal Tinsley (#27 draft pick). He was
named an all-star for the first time in his career with the Hawks in 2002. On February 8, 2004 Atlanta traded Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Theo Ratliff, and Dan Dickau
to Portland for Rasheed Wallace and Wesley Person. On August 12, 2005, Sacramento signed Shareef Abdur-Rahim to a 5 year, $29.3 million
contract.
