Joe Smith was the number one pick out of
Maryland, leading a talented group of sophomores who claimed the
top four picks. He was named the College Player of the Year by the
Associated Press, and was a unanimous first team All-American in 1995.
Joe was rookie of the month for February, after starting
off slowly. He is now one of the key players on the Warriors Team,
getting both major minutes, and contributing to the offense. As the first
pick in the draft Smith earned 2,473,000 his rookie year. He was a member
of the NBA all-rookie first team and runner up to Stoudamire in ROY voting
after leading all rookies in rebounding. He played in the
Schick Rookie Game, scoring a game-high 20 points. Unfortunately, his big
problem is that at 6-10, 225 lbs he is best suited for C or PF, but feels
comfortable at SF. Joe wears #32 in honor of Magic Johnson. On
February 17, 1998, Joe was traded along wih Brian Shaw to Philly for
Clarence Weatherspoon and Jim Jackson. After turning down a contract
rumored to be worth 80 million dollars to stay with the Warriors, they had
no choice but to trade him. He signed a one year contract in 1999 to play
with the Minnesota Timberwolves...where did he go wrong. He re-signed
with the T-Wolves in 1999-2000 for a one year deal worth 2.1
million. After a T-Wolves no-no in which they violated the salary cap,
Smith had to move over to Detroit for one year before returning to
Minnesota on July 30, 2001 after signing a 6 year contract worth
$34,035,000. In recent years he has not been very dominant, and really
needs to make a comeback! On June 27, 2003 Milwaukee traded Sam Cassell and Ervin Johnson to Minnesota for Joe
Smith and Anthony Peeler. On August 10, 2006 Milwaukee traded Joe Smith to Denver for Ruben Patterson. On December 19, 2006 Philadelphia traded Allen Iverson and Ivan McFarlin to Denver for Andre Miller, Joe Smith and two 2007 First Round Draft picks. On July 17, 2007 Chicago signed Smith to a two year 10 million dollar contract.
