Jerry Stackhouse

Stackhouse
Jerry Stackhouse was another highly coveted college sophomore who many thought should go at number two, but John Lucas and the Sixers were happy to take him at three. He was a Unanimous First team All-American in 1995. He was also named Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated. As a Freshman at UNC, he was named MVP of the ACC Tournament. In his second season, he only made All-ACC tournament first team, and didn't win MVP. He was also on the ACC All Freshman team. Jerry was often compared to that other UNC guard Michael Jordan.

He has proven he can score in the NBA, he just needs to improve other aspects of his game. He brings excitement to the court with his above the rim style of game. He can play equally well as a small forward or big guard, both suited to his 6-6 frame. He was the highest scoring rookie in his draft class averaging 19.2 points per game on the way to being named to the NBA All-Rookie First team. He also was named rookie of the month for March. Jerry set Philly franchise records for points scored and minutes played by a rookie. He has had a taste of the All-Star weekend, competing in the Rookie Game and the Slam Dunk Competition. He figures to soon take his place amongst the All-Stars. He earned 1,987,000, third best in this draft class. In 1996, the Sixers drafted Allen Iverson to give Jerry some help in the backcourt and maybe bring a winning season to the City of Brotherly Love. Unfortunately, there really wasn't enough room for these two young guards, plus the addition of Jim Jackson in the 1997 off season, so Jerry was traded with Eric Montross to the Pistons on December 18, 1997 for Theo Ratliff and Aaron McKie. Detroit signed him to a seven year contract worth 37 million dollars on January 22, 1999. Jerry has been putting up monster numbers for Detroit once he suceeded retired Joe Dumars in the starting lineup. On September 11, 2002 Washington traded Richard Hamilton, Bobby Simmons, and Hubert Davis to Detroit for Jerry Stackhouse, Brian Cardinal, and Ratko Varda. On June 24, 2004 Washington traded Jerry Stackhouse, Christian Laettner and the rights to Devin Harris to Dallas for Antawn Jamison. On July 14, 2007 Dallas re-signed Jerry Stackhouse to a three year, $21 million contract.
