My love affair with Barbie began when I was 12 years old. I went to visit a friend who was in my Sunday school class at the church my family attended. Jennifer had just become the proud owner of Barbie, a new doll that had just come onto the market that that year. This was 1959, of course.

I promptly fell in love with Barbie, and for the next three years, she was the number one choice on my wish list for birthday and Christmas gifts, along with the only other item I ever wanted with an intensity that was close to desperation, an Easy Bake Oven. This was something else that I had discovered in the wonderland of Jennifer's home.

However, since we were as poor as church mice at that point in my life, my mother never had the money for luxury items such as Barbie dolls and Easy Bake Ovens. Birthday and Christmas gifts for my sisters and myself were items of clothing, something which we always needed. Hence, my childhood longing turned into a lifelong obsession.

Three years ago, I was hired for the job in which I am now employed, and finally, I became financially able to indulge that obsession. My collection is small, only six dolls, but my aim is to keep collecting, and fulfill my childhood dream.

Oh, and by the way, the Easy Bake oven is probably next...

These are my Barbies

This is Springtime Barbie, which is the first one I bought.

The Festive Seasons Barbie, which I bought in 1998.

This is the Lemon-Lime Parfait Barbie, which actually smells like lemons.

Strawberry Parfait Barbie. Like the companion piece, she smells of strawberries.

The Olympic Skater Barbie. She comes with her own gold medal!

Barbie as Rapunzel

There is probably not a Barbie that has been made that I would not like to add to my collection, but my personal favorites are the designer dolls created by Bob Mackie. Here are some of the dolls on my wish list.

This is Mackie's wonderful 'Moon Goddess', and the one creation of his I would most like to have.

In second place on my wish list is another of Mackie's wonderful creations, the 'Sun Goddess'.

This is one of Mr. Mackie's most recent Barbie creations, a doll he calls 'Pappilion'.

"Masquerade' is another of Mackie design. She looks as if she would be right at home at Mardi Gras!

The Millennium Princess Barbie, introduced just in time for the year 2000.

This is Mackie's breath-taking 'Fantasy Goddess of Africa'. I sincerely hope he will create other dolls for this wonderful line!

Holiday Barbie, 2001 -  I had heard that Matel plans not to produce any more Holiday Barbies, so this should be a hot collector's item!

Great Barbie Links!
