In the Image of the Goddess

For a long time, I put off starting this page because I could never find graphics I thought would be appropriate for it. I have seen many absolutely wonderful pagan web pages, with gorgeous graphics; however, most of them had black or dark 'witchy' backgrounds, and that wasn't what I wanted for my Goddess page. To me, the Goddess is represented by the cool blue of the sky, the emerald green of the grass and the brilliant gold of the sun, and those are the colors I wanted in this page. I am still in search of that perfect set of graphics, but in the meantime, I wish to honor my Goddess by a page dedicated to my beliefs.

Some people ask, "Why do you believe in a Goddess instead of god?" Well, it's more like SHE believes in ME. I never scoff when my Christian friends tell me about their 'personal' experiences with God, because I have had personal experiences with my Lady since I became Her devoted follower fourteen years ago. In that time, She has provided me with all the necessities of life. Of course, sometimes we argue over the fact that believe that winning a million bucks in the lottery is a necessity of life, while She  believes that being grateful for having a roof over my head, food to eat and clothes on my back should be sufficient. Maybe someday, I'll win that argument!

My first dabblings with paganism and non-mainstream religions began when I was fifteen. My much beloved great-grandmother, a devout Christian, was dying in agony of cancer. I could not then, and cannot to this day, understand why a caring god could allow someone who loved him so deeply to suffer so greatly. Let me make it clear here and now that following the Goddess has in no way cleared up the mystery of why bad things happen to good people. It is the nature of the Universe, and is one of those mysteries to  which there seems to be no answer. All I know is that the Goddess has given me the serenity to accept that nature takes its course, no matter whether we understand it or not. As the elves in Gael Baudino's 'Strands of Starlight' series often say, "Everything happens as it should, when it should, because that's the way it happens."

When I was young, my parents attended the Church  of Christ. As an overachiever of the first water, I really dug going to Sunday School and Vacation Bible School, and racking up all those gold stars for memorizing more bible verses than any of the other kids. I was a greedy little materialist!

To this day, I believe that there are a lot of very good tenets to live by in the Christian religion; but the concept of a Goddess in preference to a god makes far more sense to me. All life in this universe begins with a female. The earth itself has traditionally been represented as a fertile female, and its worship began it prehistoric times, long before Man began to worship the deity in the masculine. Almost every early culture in history worshipped a Goddess  rather than a god, beginning with the Cro-Magnon people, who worshipped the Great Mother, starting somewhere around 35,000 BCE. The importance of fertility in crops, in domesticated animals, in wild animals and in the tribe itself were of paramount importance to their survival. Thus, the Female life-giving principle was considered divine and a great mystery.

Because I once believed that my ancestry included Irish and Welsh forbearers, I chose to become a Celtic Wiccan. I have since discovered that my ancestors actually came from such far-flung corners of the earth as Jamaica and Sweden, but I am still Celtic Wiccan because I feel it is the right path for me.

As a Celtic Wiccan, do I practice witchcraft? Actually, I practice a craft that seeks to influence the outcome of certain situations. To me, the practice of magick (I use that spelling to differentiate between what people of the craft do, and what a magician, such as David Copperfield, does on stage) is simply mind over matter. You are attempting to change a situation to its best advantage through the power of the human mind, which we all know is a very powerful tool. In accomplishing this goal, I use other tools, such as incense, candles and oils to establish a mood. If this is what you consider witchcraft, then I am a practitioner. And I call myself a witch.

Yes, I know that for some  people, that calls up images of devil worship, sacrificing babies and animals , and wild orgiastic revels under the moonlight.

I do not worship the devil simply because as a pagan, I don't believe in the devil or in hell, which are both concepts of the Christian church. I have no desire to sacrifice either a baby or an animal  because as a caring human being, I love both children and animals, and the first rule of Wicca is to harm none.

As for the orgies that pagans are alleged to participate in, I can only think of one instance where there is sexual involvement, and that is in the making of the Great Marriage during Beltane to honor the marriage of the god and Goddess. It is probably the most sacred of all Wiccan rituals, and IF it is performed, it is usually performed by a High Priest and Priestess of the circle who are married.

My purpose here is not only to honor my commitment to my Goddess, but to try to help those who are new to this path, or are trying to decide if this is the proper path for them. If I accomplish that, then my effort is worthwhile.

Isis - Isis is the Egyptian primary goddess. She is
known for her sharp wit and ambitiousness when she usurped her
throne from her father. She is a regal, brave and proud
figure, not to mention intelligent. When her husband Osiris
was killed by his brother who had trapped Isis, she bid
the servants to escape, taking along her jewels, and
she herself left behind to confront Sate.
