The Derby in Hollywood was rocked on October 23rd, 2002. Rasputina had their “recital” that night. If you have never heard of this “pseudo-classical, hard-core “positive-goth” cello” band, you are missing out. Their sound is like nothing you have ever heard. The band usually consists of 2 or 3 female cello players. The members of Rasputina come and go, but you can count on always hearing Melora’s beautiful voice. She is the singer and founder of Rasputina.

It was almost 8 o’clock when Rasputina finally came out. To no one’s surprise, at the moment the only real member of Rasputina was Melora Creager. Zoë Keating is touring at the moment to replace a former member, K Cowperthwaite who had knee surgery, at least that is what has been said. They also had their usual drummer who is not officially part of the band, John.

The first song was "Trenchmouth”, one of the harder songs from their second CD called How We Quit The Forest. This seems to be one of Melora’s favorite songs to open with. They then continued with “The New Zero”. She then gave away the next song about telling the crowd a random anecdote about Howard Hughes, a character who is also in a Rasputina song. “My Orphanage” and “Hunter’s Kiss” sounded amazing. “Hunter’s Kiss” has an eerie sound to it that just makes you feel as if you are in a scary movie.

“What’s your sign?” was Melora’s next question. The crowd then started shouting out their zodiac signs as they start “Signs of the Zodiac”. That song has one of the loveliest solos, makes one feel at peace.

Melora quickly hyped everyone up, by stating there is something we don’t know about her. Suddenly she shouts “I like big butts and I can not lie. You other brothers can't deny. That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist and a round thing in your face you get sprung!” After Melora showed us her silly side, she quickly started “State Fair”.

Its about the time of the show where I answer questions!” says Melora. Through this question and answer session, we only learned about Melora’s favorite baroque composer. She replied that it was Paganini. No one has real questions, they asked her to play certain songs. Someone asked for “Fire & Ice”, a song originally by Pat Benatar. They instantly had their wish granted. They then continued with more songs.

Melora wrapped up the set with as she calls it, their “classic”, “Transylvanian Concubine” which became popular when it was remixed by Marilyn Manson in 1997. She also mentioned that she would also play her version of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock & Roll” which according to Melora will remind one of anal sex for the first time and some bestiality. The very last song was a new cover, “Bad Moon Rising” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Rasputina put on a wonderful show with a set representing the best of all their 3 albums and amazing covers. They left me wanting more.
