Date Bars


1 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
3 cups flour
1 TSP cream of tartar
1 TSP salt
1 TSP vanilla
1-1/2 TSP soda dissolved in 1 TBSP hot water

Cream shortening, sugar and add eggs, beat well. Sift flour, cream of tartar and salt together. Add half of creamed mix. Mix well. Add vanilla, soda and water. Add remaining flour mixture. Chill dough. Make round cookies or bars and fill with dates. Bake 350o F oven for 15-20 minutes.
