Mrs. Poole's Fancy Buns

2 pkg. fast rising yeast
2 tsp. granulated sugar
1-1/2 cups lukewarm water
6 tablespoon sugar
2 tsp. salt
1-1/2 cups milk
1 cup water added to milk
8 cups sifted all-purpose flour
5 tablespoon shortening
2 eggs

Add yeast and sugar to lukewarm water; stir and let stand for 10 minutes. Heat milk; add water, sugar, salt and yeast mixture; add 3 cups flour and beat until smooth; add shortening and slightly beaten eggs; add remaining flour or enough of it to make an easily handled dough. Knead well. Place in greased bowl. Cover; let rise in warm place free from draft until double in bulk, 1 to 2 hours. Punch down in bowl and let rise in warm place for about 45 minutes. Shape into buns, and bake.
