Basic White Cake


2 cups sugar
1 cup butter
3 cups sifted cake flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon lemon flavoring
6 egg whites

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cream sugar, and butter until fluffy. Combine flour and baking powder; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk. Beat well after each addition. Add salt and flavorings. Beat eggs whites until stiff peaks form; fold into batter. Pour into 3 greased and floured 9" round cake pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until cake tests done.
