Old Fashioned Nutmeg Cake


CAKE
1/4 c. butter or margarine
1/4 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
3 eggs, beaten
2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
2 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. buttermilk or sour milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla

FROSTING
6 tablespoon melted butter
2/3 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. cream or canned milk
dash of salt
1 c. shredded coconut
1/2 tsp. vanilla

CAKE
Cream sugar, butter, and shortening. Add eggs; beat well. Sift together dry ingredients. Add to shortening mixture alternately with buttermilk or sour milk. Add vanilla. Bake at 350 degrees. Bake 2 (9inch) layers for 25 minutes. Bake 1 (13x9 inch) pan for 30-40 minutes.

FROSTING
Mix all ingredients. Spread on hot cake and put under broiler for a few minutes until golden color. Watch carefully.
